I had a group of trip photos that I took in a folder on my computer disk named Farm_Photos and imported them into PSE.
Some days and weeks later I got photos from some other people on that same trip. I put them in sub-folders so that I had this file structure:
Farm_Photos (containing my photos)
from_K (containing K's photos, etc)
from_L
from_R
from-T
I subsequently imported each of those sub folders into PSE, each by themself. From within PSE in folder view I could see that same structure as above. I could click on each folder independently to see AND EDIT the files in that folder. This is something that I have done many times before.
Several years later I went back to look at this group of files in more detail. For a variety of reasons I decided that I now wanted all of the files in a single folder. So I used the folder view to select the files in folder 'from_T' and used the 'Move' command to move those files into Farm_Photos. I did this with each of the other sub-folders until all of the files were in Farm_Photos. I checked several times for any missing files (in case something came 'unstuck'). At the end, I deleted all of the sub-folders. Everything seemed fine.
Now it turns out that if select one of my original files and use the Elements Editor to make changes, when I try to save my changes the checkbox to save the edited photo in a version set is greyed out! The correct file name is present, and if I just try to save, I'm told that the file already exists and asked if I want to replace it. I can 'save as Copy', which automatically adds "-Copy" to the filename. I can add "_edited-1" manually and save the file.
HOWEVER, if I select any of the other files in the folder (which had been in the 'from_' files), those edit without any problem! And I have no problem editing and saving a file from any other folder in the catalog. Only the files in the original folder before the move operations.
The file path is shown correctly for any of those files, both in organizer and in editor. The files are all jpg; no layers are involved.
Any ideas? Anyone heard of anything like this? It would seem that organizer is not sending the correct information about these files to the editor. Something is causing the editor to grey out that option.
I am about to try using PSE to move all of my original files out of that folder and into another folder to see if that changes how they are treated when sent to the editor. If they work OK then I'd send them all back. [Perhaps instead I will just do it with a single file first!]

Yes Indeed! I selected a file and moved it to another folder (a new sub-folder that I created as part of the move operation). That folder appeared in the folder list. I highlighted it, selected the newly moved photo, and clicked on Editor. I made changes in the editor, selected save, and the save panel opened with Save in Version Set with Original checked and the file name appended with "_edited-1".
I cancelled the operation, closed the file and returned to the organizer. There I selected the file in the sub-folder and Moved it back to the main folder with all the other files. When I edited it and tried to save it, Save in Version Set with Original checked and the file name appended with "_edited-1".
So I guess I have a 'fix'. But I was certainly perplexed about what happened.
