Film wins out for the USAF. The U2S uses a film camera that can read a newspaper headline from 70,000+ feet. The film is 6" wide and 10,500 feet long which weighs 250 pounds. The U2S has many other sensors which offset the time delay for film development.

The film is 6" wide and 10,500 feet long which weighs 250 pounds. Very cool. Thanks. That would be a bit much to haul around while hiking, eh? I'd like to see a photo of the actual camera...bet it's pretty neat. That's an optical bar camera on the right. Definitely large.

Interesting. If the format is square, then there would be close to 21,000 images per roll, right ?

I'm pretty sure the end product isn't square. I have no idea how the almost 2 miles of film is processed
Here's a paper that details how declassified U2 imagery is being used to study Near Eastern Landscapes including how the images ore stitched together. BuckSkin your question stimulated more interest ... Thanks
