I imported a bunch of freebie PNG files and initially they had a white background when viewing them in my folders but now almost all of them are black so I cannot tell what the are unless I open them. It's only on the ones that have words or type of some sort. I hope my description makes sense. Thanks!

This has been a known problem in Windows for some considerable time and microsoft doesn't seem interested in finding a fix I'm afraid. I’ve just got used to it but I know one way round the problem is to use the free Faststone Image Viewer. It doesn’t seem to have this problem. EDIT: I experience this problem on png files of any sort not just text.

I imported a bunch of freebie PNG files and initially they had a white background when viewing them in my folders but now almost all of them are black . . . Judy, I noticed the same thing happening with my PNG files. It looks like this issue developed with the Windows 10 1903 update. Here is a fix that worked for me. I did a Disk Cleanup and made sure that the "Thumbnails" box was checked in "Files to delete". The problem disappeared! My PNG files are back to being displayed with a white background.

My PNG files are back to being displayed with a white background. Unfortunately I have found the Disk Cleanup route to be a temporary fix only and after a while I find myself back where I started.

I guess I got lucky; my fix is sticky. I don't know if it makes a difference or not but, when I did the Disk Cleanup, I also cleaned up the system files and followed up with defragmenting and optimizing the drives.

Hmmmm I'm never sure about cleaning the system files in case it messes with my system. (call me paranoid...lol) I think I'll just leave well enough alone. I have put up with the black png files for so long now that I have become used to them and as I said if it bothered me that much I could always view them via the Faststone Image Viewer.

blackmutt , I had some PNG files (downloaded from Pixabay) stored on a drive which I had not cleaned up. Some of the files had a black background. I tried the suggestion posted on that website; I copied/pasted the problem files into another folder. Black background gone!

I will try it. They started out with the normal checkered background and at some point turned black and basically look like black thumbnails.
one thing makes me a little nervous is that the “solution” about a disk cleanup is 2 years old. That would be before win 10 no? I will try the moving to another folder

one way round the problem is to use the free Faststone Image Viewer. It doesn’t seem to have this problem.
FastStone is wonderful; it is the backbone of my digital imaging endeavors.

It has happened to me only a few times and I don't know how those files were different from other .png files.
I downloaded those again and saved them as .psds on first opening.
