For this Creative Effects Challenge we are going to create this image - yes it is borrowed from Endless Possibilities #250. Now for the process: 1. Open an Image that you would like to use for this challenge. 2. Add a new blank layer above it. 3. Fill the layer with 50% gray. Go to Edit>Fill and select 50% Gray, then click ok. 4. Add a layer mask to the top Layer. 5. Turn off the chain link between the fill layer and the layer mask by clicking on it.
6. Make sure the layer mask is selected. 7. Alt/Option click on the Layer mask. Your screen should go white. 8. Press d on your keyboard to set the foreground color to black. 9. Select the shape tool – other wise known as mister blobby.
10. I selected Crop Shapes from the menu. Feel free to select any shape you like.
11. Draw a shape on the layer mask, be sure to not go off the image. You can now use the transform tool to adjust the size of the shape and position it. 12. When you are done, hold down the Alt/Option key and click on the layer mask in the layer stack. 13. Your image should now show thru the shape you just created. 14. Go to the STYLES tab and select Complex or use texture – it’s up to you.
15. Change the opacity on the top layer to 50%. The image should now show thru a little. Adjust the opacity to your liking. 16. Select the layer mask and paint with black to allow more of your image to pop out. 17. If you paint back to much, touch it up by painting with white on the mask. 18. Final layer stack.

Interesting way to make a mask, Frank. I didn't like having her feet or hands overlap so kept her contained within the mask.

Helen - Thanks for getting this started. Great take on the image.
There may be a few other item that you can make a mask from.

Frank, I can just tell . . . this is going to be so much fun! - Applied a texture by Charles Perrault (Old Washed Watercolor Paper, Linear Burn blending mode, 50% Opacity). - Applied a texture by Photomorphis (Island Flora, Soft Light blending mode, 100% Opacity). - Image from Pixabay.

Spent too much time on this not to post.....but!!!! Well I'm glad you posted it. If I was to be critical at all I'd say perhaps adjust the opacity so that the background could show through a touch more. Beautiful old tractor.

Frank I hope you don’t mind me asking but I am a bit confused...when I saw the heading for this challenge and I saw your example I thought at first it was more like an OOB (out of bounds) image as I thought that part of the bears back and his paw were out of the mask/frame so to speak. But as I followed the instructions it seemed to me that actually that was not the case. I don’t know if I’ve worded this properly, maybe it's the term 'Pop-out' that I find confusing. Perhaps you could clarify this for me. Thanks.

Hi Lillias, I am sorry for any confusion on my part. As I stated in step 16 that you can add to the mask to make it "pop out". At the time that was the best title I could give this challenge. This is the alternate version that really pointed me in the direction of the title.

Frank...when I saw the heading for this challenge and I saw your example I thought at first it was more like an OOB (out of bounds) image as I thought that part of the bears back and his paw were out of the mask/frame so to speak. But as I followed the instructions it seemed to me that actually that was not the case. Speaking for myself, the pop-out term is pretty clear to me. Step 16 is the one that enables you to create this effect, i.e., that allows part(s) of your image to be "out of the mask/frame". 16. Select the layer mask and paint with black to allow more of your image to pop out. Anyway, that's how I created the pop-out effect in my two entries -- some of the tulips in the vase and the Statue of Liberty's torch are popping out of the layer mask/frame. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/67735photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/67745
