Sorry for posting this a couple of days late. I hope everyone is keeping well as we continue to steer our various courses through this thing. The theme this month was brought to mind by an image I did recently of my cat's paw, and entered (and was very kindly voted on by a few of you) in the last IOW poll vote. I generally steer clear of ever converting my images of animals to black and white because I feel that colour is such an integral and important part of a living creature, but as black and white typically makes us look at things in a slightly different way, maybe by viewing our familiar animals differently we will see details that we otherwise miss. Of course they don't need to be pets; any number of wild animals, large and small, furry, feathered or scaly could make great subjects. I will, as always, be fascinated by what you come up with. Opossum walking across the top of a fence in the evening. In B&W, this opossum looks rather cute instead of totally scroungy. i.ibb.co/2sV2Ggq/possum.jpg

So much for cats and dogs which I thought would be the first to show up here! Two nice ones, Karen and Clive.

Sorry, Helen. I don't do black & white. (Wish I could). I have three black dogs, but that wouldn't count. The detail on alexr's cat paw is great.

Meet Griffen aka Griff, a light-colored (mostly) Bernese Mountain Dog who lives at a fishing lodge 70 km SE of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Griff is adorable. We were supposed to have been there this past week, flying out tomorrow, but NWT banned all tourism until further notice. Next year, right?

I thought I'd try a tundra swan (taken when they passed through here in March) as they are basically black and white to start with! Conversion to BW was done in Lightroom using one of the B&W profiles (BW06) and what I found interesting was that having converted to B&W first I was able to push the texture and clarity sliders much higher than if I'd left in colour which brought out more detail in the feathers and water without messing with the colour. Must experiment some more but starting to think my usual approach of applying a BW profile as the last step might not be the best. Tony

And then there's one of our cats who is also black and white and always likes to help out in the kitchen! Tony

I'd better stop now ... way to much fun. This conversion was done years ago. Although cropped a tad tight in the bottom, this remains one of my fave photos and hangs in our dining room.

Gosh what an exceptional set of images. It seems unfair to pick out any of them for special praise because every single one has something to admire in terms of impact, light and shade, movement and texture, and they each show how monochrome images can enable one to focus on these elements.
