I have seen lots of online tutorials about using the liquefy tool to make the lips and cheeks smile. But that is only half the job in my opinion. The main part of a smile comes from the eyes. I have tried using the smile feature in PS Elements 2020 but that is only partially successful (Enhance/Adjust facial features). It cannot really make the eyes smile properly. * It seems that experienced Artists are far more advanced than photoshoppers and they can draw smiling eyes with ease. I found the video below interesting. Hi Chris,
While adjusting a smile with liquify seems to be something you see done frequently, I think the eyes present more of a challenge. In this photo the tilt of her head probably makes it more difficult.
If you had more than one picture of the same child one option might be to try to replace the eyes with one where she is smiling. I don't know how helpful that suggestion is in this case but perhaps some other members might have a suggestion.

It cannot really make the eyes smile properly. * Chris, I'm not sure you want to go down this route but . . . what about enhancing the eyes to make them sparkle, make them pop, giving the illusion they are "smiling"? Thank you Helen and Sepiana for your replies. The "adjust facial features" in PSE 2020 does have the ability to rotate the angle of the eyes which can make a little improvement in some cases. Adding "sparkle" might help but I note that its generally done to enhance the eyes on portraits that are already smiling.
With group portraits, I generally look for the best smile and swap the face or whole head. There are some situations though when there are no other back up photos to use and I use the liquefy filter to make the lips smile. I would love to find out if anyone has developed a technique to make the eyes smile. Artists and animators can do it, so I am sure there must be a way!

Hopefully in the future i will be able to find a technique or tutorial to be able to make the eyes smile with Photoshop Elements. In the meantime I will have to be patient. Evidently, apps using AI can do a reasonable job of making the eyes smile. However, they are only available on Android or ipad and the results are unpredictable. Here is what "FaceApp" can do to the sample picture (From Morguefile). Well, the eyes look convincing although the Hollywood smile and large lips look over the top in this picture of a little girl. Its not very convenient to use an android app in a PC workflow. Also this particular app nags you to purchase and has annoying ads.  Kind regards Chris |

Update. Evidently now Photoshop CC's "Neural Filters" can add a smile using AI. I really hope that Adobe will introduce neural filters to PS Elements in a future edition. Lets hope... How to Make Someone Smile in Photoshop CC www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VX8oM_M7VIKind regards Chris |

I really hope that Adobe will introduce neural filters to PS Elements in a future edition. Chris, In PSE 2022 Adobe introduced Artistic Effects. They are based on Photoshop's Neural filters. However, they don't have all the bells and whistles of the Neural filters in Photoshop. Neither do they offer the Smart Portrait Neural filter. Artistic Effects in Photoshop Elements 2022 |

I second the motion. I think that particular kid looks best unmolested; as taken, it is a very good memorable portrait that displays their character; doctored up, even a very good job of doctoring up, and it is just another smiling kid amongst the millions. If you really want her to smile, get her a pony. |
