I am thinking of going down the subscription route for photoshop and lightroom ( which I have never used), however I still run windows 8.1 and wondered if it is really necessary to upgrade to Windows 10? Does anyone have Photoshop CC and run Windows 8.1?

I don't have that combination (I have PS and LR CC with Windows 10) but I gather there are problems with the latest CC versions and Win 8.1. Some reports are that they will run if you already have them installed but they won't install if you don't already have them. According to the Adobe web-site the latest version of Lightroom Classic CC does not support Win 8.1 .

Thanks for answering Tony, I knew about Lightroom not being compatible, but it wasn't something I was interested in learning or using. Looks like I may have to move to Windows 10, either that or change to the latest version of PSE, now to do more homework on whether or not 8.1 supports that option....

I still run windows 8.1 and wondered if it is really necessary to upgrade to Windows 10? Hi Jacki - Photoshop aside, I would say the answer to this question is a resounding Yes. 1) Microsoft no longer supports Windows 8, which means no security patches are available. It is very important to have an operating system that is patched. 2) Windows 10 is a much better operating system than Windows 8. While many people were devoted to Windows 7, I don't think nearly as many were devoted to Windows 8 and were happy to upgrade.

Well apart from using photoshop, I think one should always keep updated. I was also using windows 8 and was really satisfied with it until I found out that some drivers are not compatible with windows 8 as they are new. If you want your gpu to be updated you should shift to windows 10 as gpu is really important in photo shop world.

A further update to this post, I have finally moved to Windows 10, and subscribed to PSCC. It's running really slowly and not being very responsive in so many ways.....AAAAArrrghhhh!!! Any and all suggestions will be very much appreciated. In the meantime I have my savvy 18 year old to help me, as to how long I can withstand the withering remarks about my IT abilities remains to be seen....

Did you change machines or just install Windows 10 on your current machine ? I have a different opinion on updates and upgrades; every machine around here, ten or more, --- no - twelve at the moment, has had updates disabled for years and my world has not come to an end yet. Enough about that. If you installed on your old machine, it may not have enough horsepower to handle the added load of resource-hungry programs. Also, it is possible that a slower internet connection may play a part in how well these subscription/cloud programs perform. As for the operating system, many of these programs will run fine on older versions of Windows, but the creators will design the program to reject being installed on an older system.

Jacki, I am a CC subscriber -- Photoshop/Lightroom; I have both apps running on Windows 10 Pro (on two computers). There is no sluggishness; both are very responsive. I would suggest you look into your computer system (RAM, graphics card, processor, etc.). Photoshop is very demanding! According to the Help file, . . . Thankyou Buckskin and Sepiana, you have both given me some things to check out and follow up. The internet problem may be out of my hands, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. I will get my techie onto it as soon as he gets out of bed......usually some time in the afternoon.

Well I have had better success this morning, not lightning fast but much better than last night. Perhaps it just needed a night's rest to settle in.... Windows 10 was installed on my old machine and that went smoothly. I will still however look into what horsepower I'm running and maybe look at something with a little more grunt in the future. Off now to experiment a bit more and see how it goes.
