I am trying to create a feathered edge on the inside of a circular mask when processing an image to get a fisheye effect. Here is what I mean. In the first picture I have applied the spherise filter to a square crop. Then I can use the Elliptical Marquee tool with a feather to create a feathered circular mask. Then Control J to a new layer. Finally I added a black fill layer underneath. Here is the layer stack: Here is the result: You can see the feather is applied inside and outside the circular mask. The effect I want is to have a sharp outer edge to the circle and just feathering on the inside. Is there an easy way I can do this? Your advice would be appreciated. Kind regards Chris

See if this will work, Chris....... Just tried this quickly on an image that I had been working on..... Make your selection and stroke with black. Copy the selection to a new layer and fill with black. Move this layer under the selection. Control D to deselect. Now apply a gaussian blur to this black circle. Apply a mask to your original selection and using a black brush paint in the blur from beneath. A screen shot of the painted in blur

hi Chris, Try this: Make your selection of what you want in your image. Press control/Cmd+j to put it on a new layer Click on that layer to make a selection Apply Filter>Distort>Spehrize with the selection active at 100% Add you color fill layer underneath

Thank you Helen and Frank. Using both your suggestions I was able to get the effect I wanted. The feathered vignette gives the circular image a 3D planetary look. Using Helen's suggestion I made a new layer, a circular selection and an inner black stroke of 50 px followed by gausgian blur. I adjusted the transparency to taste. I also discovered that selecting the main circular image and going to Filter /Correct camera distortion/vignette helps as well. Thank you both for all your help. Final Image Layer Stack 2 Kind regards Chris PS I did some more tweaking and came up with this alternative version using just the stroke/blur to create the vignette.
