Does anyone know how the Windows folks decide who they are going to invite for the early reservation. It has been stated that by signing up you get a scan by Windows based techs and in return details about yea or nay on your machine being compatible etc.

Dick.....
I'm not sure exactly how they determine who gets the invite or not. I have a few machines and only one hasn't got the invite even though it has a genuine copy of Win7.
If you have the invite in the system tray, open it and at the top left there are three horizontal lines, stupidly named the hamburger menu. If you click on this you'll see at the bottom of the list 'Check your PC', click on this and you'll see if your machine is OK or if there are any potential problems.

Thanks Colin I did That on my wifes machine and would like to do the same for mine but that machine doesn't have the invite option.
BTW while i'm on that subject, my wife's machine got an indicator from that "Check your PC" that there may be display problems with her monitor and Win 10.............does that mean she must purchase a new monitor before Win10 will upgrade that machine? It all sounds like growing pains.

Dick -
It is more likely to do with the video card than the monitor.

Okay then, if that is so, in either case then the Window's scan is telling me to get things lined up in a row before an upgrade can be implemented,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I guess that means all of the computer repair places will have a field day when Win10 hits the street. I can see a lot of headaches occuring world wide with all of this. I think I'd be better off to take an older machine, upgrade the hardware, install Win 7 and get on down the road.
I was thinking about installing Win 7 on this Win8 ,1TB machine I'm having trouble with but I'm afraid of internal problems with that machine.

Dick. if you ever think about purchasing a new PC because of all these Windows issues, perhaps you could think about changing OS to a Mac as I did a couple of years ago. Best move I ever made. The OS if far more user friendly than Windows and you also have no need of anti virus or malware software to clog up the system. The only downside, if you can call it that, is that imac's are expensive.

I thought about that a couple of years ago. I don't remember the details but bottom line was I decided I didn't like Mac. Thanks for your concern.

Dick.....
One of my machines has a caution about the video card. However, its hard to say if this a show stopper or not. Previous upgrades have given me warnings that turned out not to be true. Given that I like tinkering with machines and that its not on my main work station I'll probably just see if it works and revert back if not.
I would take a note of the problem and since you have a year to do the upgrade you could periodically check to see if the hardware vendor has made the necessary drivers available for Win 10. I previously recommended waiting anyway to let all the bugs fall out.
As for the Windows v Apple thing - well pays your money and takes your choice - just as you can with Linux. Essentially they all have their pros and cons but what it really comes down it is that they are just different not better or worse.
I have friends who have feet in both camps and swear and curse about both systems. But switching also depends on how much investment you have in either Windows or Apple unique software - in other words it wont run on the other OS.
