I run a gardening forum on Tapatalk and we hold a monthly photo competition. People upload their photos on a given subject (the subject is important - not the quality of the photography) and towards the end of the month these are voted on via a poll. Due to Taspatalk's restrictions this means I have to save the photos to my own hard-drive so that they can be reposted for voting purposes.
I know that the photos are posted as jpegs (as some are my own pictures) but when I come to copy them some have turned into webp while others remain as jpegs. If there is a need to work on the picture I've found that Elements can't open the 'webp' versions. I can work round it but I was wondering what this webp format is and does anyone know whether Elements will eventually be able to work with it.

Hi ChrisAnn, The way I understand it is that WebP is a file format which was developed by Google. It uses lossless/lossy compression, reduces file size, and speeds up the uploading of web pages. Adobe is not in the habit of revealing their future plans. So, as the saying goes, . . . "Those who know can't tell and those who tell can't know".
There are 3rd-party plug-ins which will enable Photoshop to open these files but I have no idea if they will work with Elements. It looks like the easiest workaround for Elements users (on Windows) is to open WebP files in Microsoft Paint and, then, save them as Jpeg. Another possible workaround would be to use an online converter. -- convertio.co/webp-jpg/

ChrisAnn, lately this happens frequently on Pixabay. I have been using this work around:
Right-click and click 'Copy Image' on the sub-menu. This puts it on the clip board and I can then open it in PS with CTRL-V and save it as a .psd or .jpg. I don't know if it works in PSE.
I have not found this happening on any other web site.

ChrisAnn , good news! A visit to the Adobe forums paid off. 99jon, an Adobe Community Professional, posted a plugin which is compatible with Elements and enables you to open WebP files and save them as Jpeg. Scroll down to the post where he has the link to download it (via DropBox). Once you install this plug-in, this option will be available in the Save As dialog. Solved: Webp image formatNOTE:I installed this plug-in in PSE 2020 -- C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2020\Plug-Ins. It works flawlessly! I'm assuming it will work in the other 64-bit versions of Elements as well.

UPDATE:
I tested the WebPshop plug-in in the other 64-bit Elements versions (Windows) -- PSE 13, 14, 15, 2018, and 2019. No problems! It works just fine.

Thanks Sepiana and Rita. It's good to know it's not just me it's happening to. I'll download that plugin (a new venture for me) and give it a go. I'll be back if I get myself into a tangle.

I've done exactly as you recommended and yes, it works a treat. Thanks so much Sepiana and 99jon on Adobe.

ChrisAnn , you are most welcome! You made my day when you said . . . "it works a treat". Credit shared with 99jon on Adobe. BTW, thanks for starting this thread! I was not aware of this plug-in. Now I have it installed in six versions of Elements and in Photoshop as well.

I've come unstuck with opening webp files in Elements 2022 as I'd installed the plug-in in an earlier version, so I went to the thread in Adobe Forums to download it again. But it is no longer there. I must have it on my computer somewhere but don't know where to look for it so that I can install it in my current Editor. As it is such a common format I'd have thought Adobe would have included the option in their latest version - but apparently not.

Maybe a dumb question/suggestion; but, have you tried simply changing the format suffix thingie; as in, rename picture.webp to picture.jpeg and see if that works ?
I have ran across various files with weird file type suffixes; most of the time, they are something normal that has had the suffix changed for whatever purpose; change it to whatever makes sense and then they usually work.
Another workaround when in such situations is often the free programs rawTherapee and GIMP; whenever some new weird file type comes along, it isn't very long before the developers put a fix in the program. If push comes to shove, open the file in either of those programs and save as a jpeg.

I must have it on my computer somewhere but don't know where to look for it Do you still have the version installed that did have the plug-in ? If so, just drag/drop it from that program into the new program, in whichever folder is appropriate.

Thanks for your suggestions Buckskin. I'll have a go at all of them just so that I know what's what. I do have Irfanview on my computer but that won't open a webp file. I'll leave it now until tomorrow morning in the hope that my functioning braincells are refreshed and raring to go!

Thanks so much. I've done it. I ended up copying the version I had in Elements 2020 into 2022 and then clicked on it to run it. Clicking it was the stage I'd been missing out. Once I'd done that all is well.
Please don't delete this thread as I shall need it again the next time I update Elements. It's easier to find it on here than copy the information into a 'safe place' on my computer!
I really need to look further into plug-ins, I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of goodies by just sticking to the basics.

Just adding some clarification for the benefit of new users of Elements who may be following this thread . . . Copying/pasting worked in your case because both Elements 2020 and Elements 2022 are 64-bit apps. However, it won't work in 32-bit versions of Elements. We cannot install a 64-bit plug-in in a 32-bit hosting app (and vice-versa). There will be an incompatibility issue. 64-bit versions:
Windows -- PSE 13 and above. Mac -- PSE 12 and aboveI tested installing this plug-in in Elements 12 (Windows), a 32-bit app. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12\Plug-Ins\ . . . When I tried to open a WebP file, this error message popped up and Elements stopped dead in its tracks. I really need to look further into plug-ins, I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of goodies by just sticking to the basics.
