Very impressive Clive, looks like you're in for a stormy night.

These are great, Clive! I especially like the top one. Did you use a gun? I keep setting up my camera in hopes of getting some lightning shots....but the storms never show up. Maybe soon though.....

So that's where our storms came from.

Thanks all. It was a pretty decent lightning show. I now regret no going for a drive in the country as I've pinned a couple of good "clear horizon" spots on my GPS. I was figuring it would rain hard and then you can't set up a tripod outside. The top pix was taken under the overhang over our back deck when it was raining. The second one from in front of our house as it had stopped raining at that time. Helen, do you mean a cable release or remote? No, I did not bother to use the remote and set on "bulb." Just used long exposures and crossed fingers. Top photo was a 15-second exposure and the bottom one was 10 seconds. There were a lot of flashes about, but it is still a game of chance. Clive

Sorry, Clive. Gun/trigger the old brain got confused. Was referring to something like this. I know someone who uses it in Florida and gets great results. My few successes have been of the long exposure and patience variety.

Helen Yes, I have an intervalometer like this. It is used for timelapses, but also serves as a shutter release when taking "bulb" photos...so the camera does not shake when triggering. Last night I just selected long exposures and waited for each to close and shot again ..and again. Clive

Does yours also have a lightning trigger, Clive? The one posted can be set off by the lightning.

Does yours also have a lightning trigger, Clive? No. I have to shoot and pray. If I was using the electronic shutter release, I'd set the camera on bulb (open for as long as the shutter is depressed) and point where the action is. Last night I just used a pre-set long exposure and activated the shutter ... fingers crossed. I took over 200 photos over ~1 hour and got a few decent lightning captures. This was a 47-second exposure that captured several events. Was a great night because there was no rain where I was and so shooting was a charm ...

Another good one, Clive! No. I have to shoot and pray. I think your prayers were answered. I know someone in Florida who uses the Pluto. They get a lot of thunder storms, so worth it for him. We don't get that many....especially with the bolts of lightning....often our lightning is more the flash variety.

Thanks Helen. OMG! I just realized the 2009 photo was shot on August 1!! Same date as last night! Cool. We get a photograph-able lightning storm every few years. We do get our share of t-storms in summer, but most with behind-the-clouds flashes...perhaps like yours.
