Can anyone tell from this photo what is causing the extreme "texture" over the whole photo? I've never seen a photo look like this and have no idea how to get rid of it. Have tried a few things but nothing works.

It looks like an intentionally applied Texture because there seems to be a pattern of stripes in it. With a moire, as one gets with newspaper scans, I have never seen that. But that is another possibility.

Hi Pat, I understand your concern. I have seen a similar concern expressed in a FB group that I am in by a very competent user. She found no way to address this issue. While the image may not appear exactly as you would like it to, if you are using it for the book you are creating, I think the importance of the picture should override a concern for its appearance. It may be somewhat less noticeable when printed on the paper used in most photo books. Just my thoughts....

I just checked a photo book that I had made of scanned images. I think if the original picture was printed on more of a matte paper this texture would be evident. Here is a picture that I had used in the book I created. You will see the same sort of thing....but maybe not as evident.

Have tried a few things but nothing works. Hi Pat, I may be wrong but it looks like this is a scanned photo and you are seeing what’s called moiré patterns. If this is the case, try this tutorial. Remove Moiré Patterns from Scans (PDF) NOTE:This tutorial is written for Photoshop but it can be followed in Elements. Just keep in mind . . . - In Elements the Unsharp Mask filter is under the Enhance menu. - Elements doesn’t have the Edit>Fade [name of the filter] command. You need to use this workaround. -- How to Edit>Fade . . .

Some more information about the history of the picture would help understand what’s going on. Is it a print of an original photo, a scan of a photo, a scan of a magazine or newspaper print? That would help figuring out what happened and hopefully correct it.

I believe that is a scan of an old school Matte print; if so, the texture can mostly be gotten rid of by Filter > Noise > Dust and Scratches and adjust to your liking.

I’m sure that’s it and I now recall seeing something similar with an old scanner which came with a dust and scratches filter that worked quite well in that case. Something to do with the way the scanner light reflects off textured surfaces I recall. Tony

Hello, Everyone!
I want you to know that I have been puzzling over the various posts, trying out this and that (learned about blending modes. . . .that's a positive) for a while now. One of the posts mentioned a "Remove Moire Patterns From Scans" which I printed out and followed. In item #1 it mentioned scanning at a high resolution. I decided to dig around and find the original book and try rescanning it differently using the higher res plus I made sure I was scanning it as a black & white. Since the original scans were done years ago on a different scanner I am starting to think that was the basic problem. When I scanned this morning the results had NO MOIRE PATTERNS!!! I am SO VERY GRATEFUL to you all for what you wrote put me on the correct track to solving this. I was starting to think I would be unable to use any of these photos. Now I can use any of them I need.
Many thanks!! A friend of mine is starting back into Photoshop and decided to go with Photoshop Elements. She has good experience with PS and I told her to sign up here (which she did). I know she will be in good hands with PSE&More.

Hello, Helen
You are absolutely correct when you write, ". . . .the importance of the picture should override a concern for its appearance." Amen! That thought crossed my mind at the start but then I lost sight of it in all the dithering to figure out what could be done. As it turned out, by rescanning, I was able to add a precious page to the story. I think the images would have been unusable otherwise. As it is, the photos are not very good but I am happy with them all the same because of what you wrote.
Thank you so much!!!
Pat

You are welcome, Pat. I am glad that Sepiana could offer you a tutorial that helped you improve your pictures. I know I sometimes have to remind myself about what's really important when I am working on a project. I imagine you are going to have a huge sense of accomplishment when you finally complete your book/books.
