I am using PSE19 on an iMac OSX 13.6.
When I am typing text and press the RETURN key, the text does not go down far enough. I believe Tracking has to do with how close together the letters are and Leading has to do with the space between the lines. The problem is that no matter what number I change Leading to, it still moves down just a small amount and is typing on top of my first line. It doesn't matter what font I am using, either. It does the same thing on all of them. I have tried turning off my computer and letting it sit for a while. Makes no difference. Although I don't have a tremendous amount of text, this is still a problem. I need to figure out what is causing it.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Pat

Pat, I’m not sure what is causing the problem you describe but you could try resetting the Type tool. If that doesn’t solve the problem, let’s try deleting the Preferences file. Reset the Type tool:Go to the right end of the Tool Options area and select "Reset Tool".
Delete the Preferences file:According to the Help file, . . . Go to Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>Preferences>General. Click on the "Reset Preferences on next launch" button. Ignore the "This cannot be undone." warning and click OK. Close Elements and then start it again.

Pat, have you tried AUTO for the leading? It's the only thing that works for me. Rita

ritage, Great thinking! The Leading setting could be the one causing the problem. If so, as AUTO is the default, resetting the Type tool will take care of it.

Sepiana, the reason I suggested to do it manually was only in case the OP had already set any of the other features.

Sepiana and Rita,
Thank you so much for your help and thoughts about this issue. I have waited to reply as I started noticing all kinds of problems after I posted the above message. It turned out that my mouse stopped working and I had to get a new one. Once I started using it everything pretty went back to normal with one exception. . . . .the Type tool in PSE.
I honestly don't know if it is something I am doing or what but several things happen consistently. I have normally kept Leading on the AUTO setting. But when I push the Return button it wasn't going low enough and half the text on the following line was ending up on top of the text from the previous line. Yet when I would change the Leading setting to a number it would not hold and went back to AUTO.
I am also unable to select parts of the text in order to change it. It simply won't select anything and hold it.
My current solution to using the Text tool is to treat each line as a separate entity and hit the green check mark (commit the current operation). At least if I have to change something I am dealing only with that one or two lines. Also, I can move the line up or down so that the spacing between lines is to my liking.
I know this can't go on, but I need to keep my project moving. I've never had this kind of trouble with the Type tool before.

Hi Pat, that's not good news! Did you try resetting the Type tool or deleting the Preferences file as suggested earlier in this thread?

Pat, Have you reset the tool as has been suggested? Can you please post a screen shot of the setting for the type tool? This is what I am looking for

Hello Again I didn't read the posts here until this afternoon. I had been working with the Type tool and having the usual difficulty. I did reset the tool yesterday but nothing was changed. So I decided to try again today. I took a screen shot of the setting for the type tool as requested. It is posted below. After taking the photo, I reset the tool and then tried using it in my current project. I have no idea of anything done differently but this time it seems to be working as it should. I'm going to keep going here and see if it continues to operate correctly. Thank you everyone. I hope thngs will keep working this time.
