As the problem seems to have passed and been only temporary, I almost decided to not mention it; however, I thought I would share the experience in the event it may be helpful to someone else, or even helpful to me should the temporary glitch come back to haunt me more permanently.
All seems to be back to normal now.....we shall see.....
For the last several weeks, I have been wading through editing/improving a couple thousand photos that I took on a mule train ride last year.
Just last night, I closed out of everything and shut down the machine so as to let the monitor screen cool off so I could clean it; it was beginning to look like the windshield of a dump-truck after two weeks of hauling blacktop; so, the machine and all programs had a fresh start last night.
Then today, the weirdness began --- so far as I know, only with Elements.
The first hint that something was amiss was that, when I wanted to "stamp visible" {(so far as I know, Elements 7 does not have an actual stamp visible command) = click and hold "Layers > Merge Visible", press the Alt key, and release Merge Visible while holding the Alt key}, about two out of three tries, it would ignore the fact that I was holding the Alt key and just flatten my layer stack.
After a bit of this, I closed Elements, deleted preferences, and fired it up again = all I accomplished was losing all of my preferences.
Then, Wire Worm plugin started acting up, crashing on the first and sometimes second attempt, before stabilizing and working properly.
I got derailed for a little over two hours by roast beef, potatoes, and apple dumplings; once that foolishness was taken care of, I came back to my task; and, immediately, many things were haywire.
Pressing the "H" key opened the Help menu instead of changing to the Hand tool; in fact, pressing various keys to call up tools resulted in other unwanted operations.
I pressed the bracket keys to enlarge/reduce the brush size and instead it was scrolling up and down the layer stack.
Pressing Control + J to duplicate a layer brought up a new layer dialogue instead.
As long as I didn't use the keyboard, everything else seemed to be working; curiously, I could type in a text box and that worked fine.
I had several images opened and the plan was to cripple through getting them finished before doing something drastic to cure the problem, like maybe a reinstall of the program.
And then, just as mysteriously as the problems started, they seemed to have went away and everything is working fine again.
Has anyone else had a similar experience; did it then go away, or did you have to address the situation; if the latter, what did you do ?
