I have a very old flash drive that is not being recognized by my computer. I plugged it in at work and about halfway through reading it, it stopped. On my home computer it isn't being recognized at all. It lights up but the computer won't list it in my drives. Both machines are Win10. I have seen some free recovery software to try to retrieve data from flash drives, but I don't see how it can be done if I am not able to tell the software to look at the flash drive if it isn't be seen by my computer. This flash drive has a lot of photos on it but fortunately they are dupes but they were nicely organized for taking to the photo printers for reprints. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. This week has already been a tough electronics week for me already and it's only Tuesday!! My calculator died, unrecognized printers that prevented payroll from printing paychecks! The natives get restless with that news...lol

Someone may chime in and prove me wrong on this; but, sad as it is to say, I doubt even a highly technical service could access a dead flash-drive, as a flash-drive is Solid State; no moving parts; it is either good or dead. The same is true for SSD internal and external drives.
What can be "retrieved" is data that is lost/deleted on a healthy working drive and not yet written over; I fear that is not your case.
That being said, have you looked in Disk Management to see if it is showing up at all ?
Do a search for how to access Disk Management on a Windows 10 machine.
If no unidentified disk shows up in Disk Management, then it is probably a lost cause.
One other possible is to plug it into a Linux machine; Linux can see things that a Windows machine cannot.

Yes, I have looked in Disk Management and it is not there. That is why I was wondering how these recovering software write ups say you can retrieve data from a dead usb. Thanks for responding.

Judy, That's a tough one! I have been able to retrieve data using Recuva. However, in my case, the drive was not damaged. You can look into it though; their website claims it will recover files from damaged drives. I did some googling and found EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. According to their site, it will recover data from damaged/corrupted/failed drives (including SSD).

Yea, I looked into EaseUS also, but when it asked for which drive to recover data I can't go any further. The bad USB is not listed as the computer doesn't recognize it. If I remember, I will ask the IT department at work tomorrow. Thanks!

If the computer won't recognize the USB drive, it's very likely gone for good. Unlike a conventional hard drive, a USB is not even heavy enough to make a good paperweight.
