For this composite, I selected a muted photo for the background and blurred it. Then the insets were dropped in and all given the same "Edit layer style" treatment in which they received a stroke and outer glow. I would have done one inset and then copied the layer style and pasted the layer style to the remaining insets.

Clive - nice job on your collage. The background, though slightly bolder in color that I would think to use, works so well with your photos - creating a great backdrop. You have used my favorite technique to make the photos stand out -- outer glow. However, I'm also big on shadowing (and sometimes stroking). I can't count how many times these techniques have been the only thing I've used to make photos stand out on my pages. It has almost replaced framing - because it's softer. I also like how you've disbursed the titling. It breaks up the page - creating extra interest. I have used a slightly more definite outer glow and some shadowing and other layer styles... This is typical goose behavior. Dad takes the rear guard position, while mom leads the family. I've seen it time and time again. So very cute. (excuse the quality, it's a screenshot)

Here's one where I used Clive's technique of "disbursed titling" (I think I've coined a new term LOL) - I really like how using text in various places on the layout breaks up the photo array. Actually, disbursing is about money - but I have hijacked the term for this. The background is the water - I enlarged the water part of the photo to fill the whole page to use as a background - then lightened it - there are some brushstrokes, too. I used only shadowing to enhance the photos. As I did here and on the above layout, I use brushes with a light color when I want my text to better stand out from the background. Again - a screenshot - so kinda blurry - sorry

Here's an old one. Another one with glow and shadow. As you can see, it is a favorite technique of mine. Until I started looking through my stuff, I didn't realize how often I used glow. (or realize how similar my collages are in design) OK OK - I'm done - I think you get the drift LOL Please try Clive's technique. I think you will be very happy with the result.

Fabulous collages Janice. I specially like your aquaboat and jeep adventure page. Great images and looks like lots of fun being had. TFS.
