One from the garden today, this bee could not get enough of the lupins. Taken with a 40-150mm zoom with a sigma double element macro lens/filter attached to the end of it. I find this combo more easier to use for insects than my dedicated macro lens as it allows a greater working distance from the subject.

Yikes! I hope this doesn't rekindle my childhood bee nightmare! This is SUCH a fine picture Paul; thanks for sharing it!

I tried googling "sigma double element macro lens/filter" and got nothing. Can you give me a link to this filter? I have a Sigma 17-70 Macro lens I might like to try it on, if you think it would work with my lens?

Hi Charles, It is the Sigma Achromatic Macro Lens - 58mm - +1.6 2-Element Diopter you can also get it in a 52mm version, a double element achromatic is a lot dearer (for good reason) than the cheaper single element close up filters. They work best with telephoto lenses and are designed for the 70-300mm range The bad news and the good news is..it is now discontinued ..but you can sometimes pick one up on E-bay for between $8 -$30 but the 58mm is rarer than hens teeth. If I tell you that the nearest to it is the the Nikon 3T +1.5 on amazon at $299 you can see what a bargain it is if you can find one. Another one from last summer with that filter attached to my Olympus 40-150mm lens. The image is not cropped.

Those are amazing insect photos- the detail is so clear. Never had a chance to have such a close up view before.
