A few raccoons have been in southern Alberta for decades, but I've never seen a live one until this afternoon on my hike. (Seen a few road kills over the years.) By all reports, despite their silly cuteness, they are nasty pests when they get out of hand ... and in your attic or shed. No matter, I was pleased to see this incredibly cute raccoon this afternoon.

We used to have a raccoon who was quite pesty when we lived in our house. He actually came up to the back storm door one night and slapped his paws against the storm door and peered inside. They had a nest in the woods behind our house. Here is some useful info about seeing them during the day. He does look like a cute one!

Thanks Helen...will read. This little guy or gal was snuggled and curled up in a large tree limb/trunk. I had to yell at it and toss a twig at it to get it to look up for a few seconds. It just wanted to sleep. I am not sure what they are eating in the valley in winter. There is zero garbage here so perhaps they find mice, although apparently not great hunters. Clive

Lucky you Clive, such a cute face. Sounds like the equivalent of our brush-tailed possums here, they like to get into peoples roofs and can be very noisy and nasty when disturbed, though they too are incredibly cute, though not when they've eaten all the buds off the rosebushes....

When we built our last house, we were greeted by a family of four the night before we were to move in. They had their paws on the window ledges looking in. Seemed to be saying “so who are our new neighbors?”
We fed them for a while before coming to our senses. Never encourage raccoons or you will soon have tenants in your attic.
But it was so darn cute - watching mom and dad teaching the kids how to climb trees, etc. As you can imagine, raccoons are not an unusual sight in the States. They are pests, but I loved seeing them in my yard.
Clive, your photography skills continue to astound me. You are a master in capturing such beautiful shots.

We were anticipating a nice crop of heirloom tomatoes in the garden this year - unfortunately the raccoons knew exactly when they would be ripe for picking and brought their family and friends to the party. Just left a couple for us. Back when we lived on a farm and had one row of sweet corn in a field of regular field corn the it was always a challenge to get there before the racoons got there - they could strip the whole row in a night and they knew the difference between the good stuff and the regular stuff! And then there are the bird feeders - Orioles love grape jelly but so do racoons so we have a cage round the feeder. One night a raccoon took the whole lot, cage and all. They are very smart when it comes to food.
Great picture Clive - just don't encourage them!
Tony
