I operate in the Desktop Mode in Win8.1 with Google Chrome/Tabs instead of Icon's for all my places or site's of interest. I do have a few Icons of things I need or would like quick access to. I would like an Icon shortcut to "Photos" which is on the Apps screen,,,,,,is there a way to move that Icon to my desktop? I can't find a way in my efforts for the last hour or so but that sure doesn't mean any thing more than "I can't do it "? dick

Dick
I don't think you can create a shortcut on your desktop for a Windows App, you can however pin it to your taskbar as follows:
On the Start screen, press and hold or right-click the app, and then tap or click Pin to taskbar (you can also do this in the Apps view). – or – If the app is already open on the desktop, press and hold or right-click the app's taskbar button, and then tap or click Pin this program to taskbar.
Note
To remove a pinned app from the taskbar, open the app's Jump List, and then tap or click Unpin this program from taskbar. Hope this helps!

Dick,
Try this.
1. Right-click on the app to select it. 2. Click on the "Open file location" button at the bottom of the screen. 3. Right-click on the app. 4. Select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
EDIT: I haven't tried this myself. So, I am not sure it will work.

A quick search reveals that apparently you cannot create a shortcut for a Windows App to your desktop.
I think pinning it to your taskbar is your only option dick.

You are correct. I have been doing some research too (especially because I am quite new at using Windows 8.1). The option for a Windows App is the taskbar. It is a different story when it is an app downloaded from the Windows store. In this situation, the option I mentioned before seems to work.

dick,
I am currently in work, where we use Windows 7, so I won't be able to do any screenshots etc at this moment in time.
I do run Windows 8.1 on a couple of our machines at home, so should be able to help you further over this weekend if nobody else is able to help you in the meantime.

Whoa Nellie!!!!!!! go no further,,,,,,,,,,Option#1 did the job. Clicking on this ICON opens the App,select an image, click anywhere on the screen background, gives you a button at the bottom of the screen to click that brings up a dialog box with 4 or 5 different editors to chose from. I click on PSE and it immediatedly opens the image in the PSE workspace direct. Just what I was looking for. Thanks ,,,you found the answer one more time. dick

I have many programs that I launch from icons on the desktop. Do you have File Explorer in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen? If so, click that and navigate to your Photos folder. Right-click on it and choose Send To from the pop-up dialog, then Desktop. EDIT: I just realized I didn't understand what you were asking originally; all I found so far was by right-clicking Photos I could pin that to the tool-bar in desktop mode.

Thispost was very helpful in letting me make a Shortcut Icon to an App. Disregard any thing I may have said about how I would use it. I found a better way for me.
thanks dick
