I don't know if this has always been but................when I try to crop an image which has a central object and I only need to chop a sliver off one side of the image, I find when I grab the middle handle on that side and move it with my mouse, it moves it quite a lot which is bigger than the sliver I initially wanted to take off. Once I have made that initial move I can then move it further into the image in nice thin slices but if I then try to go back a bit, it still gets to a certain point then jumps to the outside.
Just found the answer to this - I had ticked 'snap to document bounds' - but thought I would leave this post in just in case other people had the same problem!!

At least in my version, Elements 7, standard behavior is for the crop line to jump to the outside boundary instead of allowing a sliver to be cropped off.
I found out from somewhere that holding the Ctrl key would override this "snap to" behavior and allow me to put the line where I wanted.

HappyScot and mossThere is another way to take a thin or thick slice off an edge. You can surgically remove a sliver down to 1 pixel by using the "canvas size" feature. <ctrl><alt><C> (Also, Image >>resize >> canvas size) Say, in this example I wanted to remove 100 pixels from the left side. When the canvas size window opens: - Shift the image to the right
- Select pixels
- In this case, reduce the width to 1,400 pixels from 1,500 pixels. (Could be any number less than 1,500 pixels. Of course, you can stay in inches if you wish and reduce width by 0.1 inch or whatever.)
When you click "OK" a warning will appear telling you that you are making the image small and will lose parts of the images. Proceed. All good.
Voila, the image is now 100 pixels narrower. It could be narrower by any pixel amount you wish. If 100 is too much, just <ctrl><Z> to undo and re-do with other than a 100 pixel reduction.

You can surgically remove a sliver down to 1 pixel by using the "canvas size" feature. Thanks ! That is one more way to get the hide off of the cat that I have never before seen, not in my many hours of reading various forums, nor in any of my countless Elements 7 books. I use the canvas size feature all the time, but always to go bigger; I never thought of going smaller. |

This option is not available in PSE 11 and earlier versions; it was one of the new features Adobe introduced in PSE 12 (along with Snap To Layers). 
The Role of the Ctrl/Cmmd Key:When we are working near a document edge, holding down the Ctrl/Cmmd key while using the Move tool will temporarily disable Snap To. If the Crop tool is activated, holding down the Ctrl/Cmmd key will bring up the Straighten tool (shortcut -- P). NOTE: This behavior seems to have started with PSE 13 and is also present in Photoshop.  |
