When I post photos, there is sometimes a serious color shift from what is on my computer. Does anyone else have that issue? Sounds like it could be a colour space issue. If you have an image that hasn't had the profile converted to sRGB it's going to show a serious colour shift. If it was AdobeRGB and hasn't been converted it will look muddy. If it was ProPhotoRGB and hasn't been converted it will look worse than muddy (awful!). I've done both at times by mistake but generally what I see on my screen before and after posting looks pretty much the same. Tony

Set up color management
In Photoshop Elements, choose Edit > Color Settings. Select one of the following color management options, then click OK.
No Color Management
Leaves your image untagged. This option uses your monitor profile as the working space. It removes any embedded profiles when opening images, and does not tag when saving.
Always Optimize Colors For Computer Screens
Uses sRGB as the RGB working space; the Grayscale working space is Gray Gamma 2.2. This option preserves embedded profiles, and assigns sRGB when opening untagged files.
Always Optimize For Printing
Uses Adobe RGB as the RGB working space; the Grayscale working space is Dot Gain 20%. This option preserves embedded profiles and assigns Adobe RGB when opening untagged files.
Allow Me To Choose
Lets you choose sRGB (the default) or Adobe RGB when opening untagged files.

I noticed that the ICC Profile:sRGB box keeps turning itself off when I do Save As. I have to remember to check it all the time. Could this be what is causing the problem? Also, when you do File>Export>Save for Web (Legacy), make sure that the Convert to sRGB box is checked.

The other point to note is that when you add images to post via imgbb on this forum the image that you see on the forum has the color profile information stripped and just assumes it was sRGB. imgbb does retain profiles so if you click on the forum image to open the original version and assuming you are using a browser that supports color profiles (most new ones do) you should see the colors as originally intended. Bottom line is that sRGB is the best to use for images posted to the forum. Here are three examples where the profiles are sRGB, AdobeRGB and ProPhotoRGB . See how different they look on the forum but if you click on the images to open them in imgbb they should all look roughly the same (assuming you are looking at them with a browser that supports color profiles. This is sRGB This is AdobeRGB - note how on the forum it looks muddy This is ProPhotoRGB - used as a working space for RAW files - on the forum it looks awful but click on it and it should look normal again. A bit of a play with a photo taken at Michaels Craft store. Too early for flowers here! I have asked this before - why are the colors so poor when I upload? Hi, Judy, I really do like these and, not knowing how they look on your computer, the colors look fine to me. HOWEVER, if you want your images to look correct, color-wise, when you upload, you need to change the color space.
I googled how to change the color space in Elements (I use Photoshop and it's different for the two programs), and found the following: In Elements, you have a choice between two workspace colors: either sRGB or Adobe RGB (1998). You access your color workspace settings by choosing Edit --> Color Settings. The Color Settings dialog box opens, as shown.
The Color Settings dialog box gives you these options:
- No Color Management: This choice turns off all color management. Don’t choose this option for any work you do in Elements. When using No Color Management, you need to work with files that have color profiles embedded in the photos. You most likely won’t use these types of photos.
- Always Optimize Colors for Computer Screens: Selecting this radio button sets your workspace to sRGB. sRGB color is used quite often for viewing images on your monitor, but this workspace often results in the best choice for color printing, too. Many color printers can output all the colors you can see in the sRGB workspace.
- Always Optimize for Printing: Selecting this option sets your color workspace to Adobe RGB (1998). The color in this workspace represents the best color you can see on newer monitors, as well as many of the newer inkjet printers. As a default, this is your best choice.
- Allow Me to Choose: When you select this option, Elements prompts you for a profile assignment when you open images that contain no profile. This setting is handy if you work back and forth between screen and print images.
Basically, choosing sRGB as your color space makes the colors more uniform and others can see the colors you see. It's a smaller color space so there's less chance of other computers getting it "wrong".
I hope this helps!

Hi, Vicky, The problem is that the color settings dialog does no longer correctly work as before and as described in the text of the dialog since about 3 years in PSE. It's probably a good thing if what you want is to use sRGB by default which is the less disastrous solution to share images on totally different and uncalibrated conditions. However for more demanding users caring for covering wider color ranges and faithful sharing, there is a big bug. It's for users shooting raw, especially if they want to print accurately.
- raw files don't have a color space. - according to the dialog, if PSE opens a raw file in the ACR dialog, there is no menu to choose the color space like in the full Photoshop.
- On the other hand, while PSE can work with many color spaces internally, it can only convert from raw to either sRGB or aRGB. - So, to define your own choices, you have to set the color settings preference in the pixel editor as shown in your post.
And, there is the BUG... Whatever choice you choose in the dialog, you only get sRGB.
See that recent discussion in the Adobe Elements forum with the participation of the guru Andrew Rodney (The digital dog):
I have got news that the Adobe team is now aware of the bug. Will it be solved in PSE2024?

why are the colors so poor when I upload? Judy, I'm afraid this is a color space issue; the consensus is that the sRGB color space should be used. You have Photoshop, don't you? If your files are converted to sRGB and you still have this problem, keep an eye on the Color: ICC Profile box when you do File > Save As. For some reason, this box keeps turning itself off. Also, when you do File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy), make sure that the Convert to sRGB box is checked.

Hi, Michel, Wow, I wasn't aware of the color space problems in Elements! I haven't had time to check out your link but will as soon as I'm able. Since I use Photoshop, I googled the Elements information and regurgitated what I found from the Elements for Dummies book.
I certainly hope this is a priority for the Adobe team...color space is important! "Will it be solved in PSE2024?" Who knows!!!
Thanks for the information.

Blackmutt, are you uploading images with the sRGB or Adobe RGB profile? If you upload as Adobe RGB on the web the colours will not display correctly on some websites including imgbb. Also, make sure you are outputting as 3 channel RGB jpg's and not 4 channel CYMK.
Kind regards Chris
