Bought new laptop without optical player. Well, you know what that means regarding my old favorite copies of PSE 10 and 14. It was not by design. I was not thinking about it at the time. Long story, but every route I tried to download copies even with serial numbers did not work at Adobe. So, downloaded trial copy of new PSE.
The trial version will not allow me to update to latest version of ACR. Is that just typical for the trial version? Is update only restored after purchase? Or is it corrupted? This is the question for this post.
I guess I could buy an external cd/dvd player now. If anyone wants to comment on that. This is my first ever puter since the beginning w/o one .
Thanks.
So, glad you guys are still here. Have not been here in a while, but you have helped me out of many a jam.

Hi Chuck,
What updated ACR are you attempting to install. I believe that PSE 2021 is using ACR 13.0 while the full version of Photoshop is ACR 13.2. So the question is are you attempting to upgrade the ACR for photoshop onto the Elements?
Do you know if the two version of elements will run on your new computer?

This is the question for this post. Hi Chuck, glad to see you back here. Long time no see! I have no experience with trial versions of Elements; this means I’m going out on a limb here. I don’t think you can update ACR when you are using a trial version. Hopefully someone else will have a definite answer to your question. Bought new laptop without optical player. Well, you know what that means regarding my old favorite copies of PSE 10 and 14. Long story, but every route I tried to download copies even with serial numbers did not work at Adobe. As to installing PSE 10 and PSE 14 on your new laptop without a DVD optical drive, you can try these alternatives. - Contact Adobe Customer Care to get the download links for these two versions. If you decide to go this way, I would recommend you go the "chat" route (instead of calling them). When you call them, you may face a long waiting time. If you prefer to call them, this is their Help phone number -- 1 (800) 833-6687. - If you have the boxed version, use the DVD drive of your old computer. Copy the entire DVD contents to a USB Thumb drive, and use this to install PSE on your new laptop. - If you have the download version, copy the installing files to a USB Thumb drive, and use this to install PSE on your new laptop. - You can buy a USB DVD drive. They are quite inexpensive these days. - You can follow Andy's suggestion. Another option is to use a free program like imgburn to create an .iso file. You can run this on a computer with a DVD drive and create an .iso file of the DVD. You can then copy that file to any computer using a thumbdrive. Windows 10 will then mount the .iso just like it was the original DVD. I've done this with some old CD's and it works great. For older versions of Windows you might need a companion program to mount the .iso file. Now, last but not least . . . fotofrank raised an important issue -- Compatibility. Do you know if the two version of elements will run on your new computer? If you are on Windows, . . . I have both PSE 10 and PSE 14 installed on two computers (Windows 10 Pro). No problems whatsoever!

Thanks fotofrank and Sepiana,
Very comprehensive answers. I appreciate it. Good info. And, fotofrank, I think Sepiana gave an answer to the question you and I both had about compatibility.
The only question that remains is this. EVen if I could put PSE 14 on my newer laptop, do I want to? If the algorithms are still the same; if the selection tools and refine edge are pretty much the same; if ACR acts pretty much the same, if there are no new whistles and buttons that make composites easier and photos better...then I am fine with 10 or 14. BUT You know we are always hoping that newer versions are slightly better. We like to think the algorithms have been tweaked and improved. If a few more Photoshop actions or tools have been moved over. Give me the best reasons for going ahead and downloading the newer one please. Let me put it this way. It isn't expensive and I am ready to download the latest. It would be for someone to give me a good reason NOT to.
Thanks again. Chuck

You didn’t ask about installing PSE 10 on your new laptop. However, I will bring this to your attention. You may also want to keep PSE 10 around. Back in PSE 12, Adobe removed some features. So, for example, if you like the Lighting Effects filter, you will need to go back to PSE 10. What features from previous versions are not available in Adobe Photoshop Elements 12?PSE 14:I don’t really see a reason to keep PSE 14 if you are upgrading to PSE 2021. PSE 2021:PSE 2021 has a lot more to offer compared to PSE 14 -- more features, more Guided Edits, and it is powered by Adobe Sensei AI Technology. The ACR Converter in PSE 2021 (ACR 13.0 Update) comes with new features/changes -- the Crop tool has changed; more profiles available; ability to import presets; changes to the interface. Here are the Adobe documents listing what's new in PSE 15 through PSE 2021. They will give you an idea of what Adobe has been up to. Hopefully this information will help you make an informed decision. What's new in PSE 15What's new in PSE 2018What's new in PSE 2019What's new in PSE 2020What's new in PSE 2021

Well, I am moving on up to 2021. As I said, it was my intention to do so unless someone came up with a reason making it unnecessary.
