Well, thanks for the Kudos, Sepiana, but I'm afraid that didn't work. First the panel where I wanted to move the png files to contained the tree thumbnails. I thought the png files would write over them but this wasn't permitted. Then I deleted them, disobeying a warning that I would never have the use of them for anything else. I figured I could retrieve them from my zipped Grants Tools folder, if I needed them. Eventually I did need them. I ended up essentially doing a folder to folder install of Grants Tools but I ended up back to the trees again.
I'm not giving you much to deal with, I know.
I think I should clean my PSE11 of any remnant of Grants Tools, and do a fresh install. I may need your help on that. Oh, one thing... what are the XML files?
At first I think my idea you liked showed promise. Sigh, it felt good getting compliments from you!
Regards,
Paul

I am afraid you were in the wrong place. You get that message when you are in the Effects panel in the Editor. The .png file from the Grant's Tools unzipped folder needs to be copied/pasted into the photo effects folder within Elements. It looks like you did it right this time. You pasted the .png file from the Grant's Tools unzipped folder into the right folder within Elements. C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Photo Creations\photo effects
If you are still getting the "tree" thumbnail in the Effects panel, this means that Elements, for some reason, is not generating the action-specific thumbnail. Let's try this! One step at a time! 1. Effects panel:
- Go to the Effects panel (Window>Effects>My Effects). - Right-click on the thumbnail, select "Delete Content". - Ignore the warning. 2. photo effects folder:
- Go to the photo effects folder ( C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Photo Creations\photo effects).- Delete these two files -- Action Curves.atn and Action Curves.png.3. Effects panel:Load the Curves .atn file into the Effects panel following the instructions posted earlier. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/627294. photo effects folder: - Check if Elements generated a .png file to go with the .atn file. - If it didn't, copy/paste the .png file from the Grant's Tools unzipped folder. NOTE: Keep Elements closed while you are doing this copy/paste job. 5. Effects panel:- Check the thumbnail to see if now you have an action-specific one. - If you are still getting the "tree" thumbnail, . . . - Close Elements. - Delete the ThumbDatabase.db3 file ( C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\ThumbDatabase.db3).
- Open Elements and see if now you have the action-specific thumbnail. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The purpose of the .xml file is to put the action file in its own category in the Effects panel. Elements has already taken care of it. When you load the .atn file into the Effects panel, it automatically goes into a category called "My Effects".

Sepiana,
Stuck again, sorry.
I'm having a terrible time getting the hang of working with more than one quote... so I'll try the old fashioned way.
Effects Panel: Where it says "Delete Content", there was nothing to delete
Photo effects Folder:
I was able to delete ActionCurves.atm but not the png partner because that one was not there.
Effects Folder:
I somehow ended up with all seven files in a dialogue box and proceeded to load them (have to do them one by one apparently, no problem). Just tried a couple but I was unable to load them, atn or png
So, was unable to determine if the thumbnail was action-specific... they didn't show up even as a tree.
I'm afraid this is not as complete as you'd like, I'm sure. Plese don't feel you have to respond tonight... it's late in the day. I'm on Mountain time, aren't you on Central? Anyway, I'm better in the morning.

OK! Here we go. Effects panel: If there was nothing to delete when you did "Delete Content", then, it looks like you had already removed the Curves .atn file you had loaded to the Effects panel. photo effects folder:
I am afraid that's the root of the problem. Elements should have generated a .png file (thumbnail) for the Curves .atn file and it didn't. That's why you couldn't find one. Effects panel:
You can load only one .atn file at a time. You have seven .atn files in Grant's Tools. You need to load only the Curves .atn file. You should have no problems if you follow these instructions. Via the Effects Panel:1. Go to Window>Effects. 2. Click on the four-lined square in the upper right corner of the Effects panel and select Load Effects. 3. In the dialog box that opens up navigate to where you saved the action (.atn file) on your computer and click on the Load button. (Or you can just double-click on the .atn file.) 4. The action you loaded will appear in a category called My Effects. At this point in the troubleshooting, here is what you need to do. 1. Load the Curves .atn file to the Effects panel following the instructions above. 2. Close Elements. 3. Go to the photo effects folder. (C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Photo Creations\photo effects} 4. If there is a Curves .png file, delete it. Then, copy/paste the one that comes with Grant's tools. 5. If there isn't a Curves .png file, copy/paste the one that comes with Grant's Tools. 6 Open Elements. 7. Check the Effects panel to see which thumbnail is there -- the "tree" or the action-specific thumbnail.

Thanks for sticking with me, Sepiana,
Here's where I get stuck... it's in your quote box, the one beginning in bold type, Via the Effects Panel: bullet point number 4. I tried to load the Curves.atn file.
The Curves.atn file did not appear in the Effects panel. I think this is where my problem begins. However, I went ahead to your second set of bullet points, 1-7. There was indeed a Curves.png file, I deleted it, and pasted a fresh one from Grants Tools. Opened Elements and tried again to load the atn file but again nothing got entered into the Effects panel.
I think we've finally isolated the issue.
BTW I was interested in the fact that I only need to load the one file, the Actions.atn. It's kind of a master file, right?

I cannot understand why this is happening. Those instructions have proven to work again and again. Here are the instructions from The Missing Manual for Photoshop Elements by Barbara Brundage. If you compare them with the ones I posted, you will see the sequence of steps are identical. "Simply click the four-line square at the Effects panel's upper right, choose Load Effects, find the file on your computer, and then click Load. The effect appears in a category called My Effects."Source: The Missing Manual, Chapter 13.This should be the result . . . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW I was interested in the fact that I only need to load the one file, the Actions.atn. It's kind of a master file, right? Yes, you need to load only the .atn file. That's the file which contains the action steps. That's all Elements needs to run it.

Do you suppose I may have inadvertently done some damage with all my fumbling around early on?
I do have Barbara's manual btw... it's for PSE13 not 11 but it appears to essentially be the same. I had it loose-leaf bound so I can lay it on the desk flat - don't need an elbow to keep it down!

I don't see how you could have caused any damage. However, to rule out this possibility, you could start with a clean slate. Make a fresh download of Grant's Tools. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/10444NOTE: I have double-checked the Curves action. I see no problem, i.e., the file is not corrupted. Before you proceed to load this action to the Effects panel, take these precautionary steps. 1. Go to the photo effects folder (C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Photo Creations\photo effects). 2. Delete any file pertaining to the Curves action -- .atn and .png (if there is one). NOTE: Keep Elements closed while you do this "cleaning-up" job. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have The Missing Manual for both versions -- PSE 11 and PSE 13. Yes, the instructions are the same.

Sepiana, you beat me to it! Turns out I was able to download the GrantsTools.zip just fine. Anyway, with this newer version (presumably) of Grants Tools, I got the seven atns right away, tried to Load the Curves.atn, but no luck. The Effects panel remained totally blank.
When I asked earlier if I might have damaged something, looks like we eliminated that possibility with our fresh copies of GrantsTools. But what about PSE11? Maybe I have a slightly different build of 11 that will not take GrantsTools? Or could I have damaged my PSE11? I should think these PSEs are pretty indestructible. PS: Going through my files, I noticed I had the Adobe DVD for PSE11. I could delete the PSE11 on my computer and do a fresh install. There was a while when Epson included a DVD of a PSE, along with the computer, scanner, whatever. It was not the current version at the time, but not that old either. My 11 has never been activated.

Sepiana,
Well, I unstalled ver. 11 from my computer and then installed the ver. 11 directly from my DVD. Sad to report, I got the trees again. The copy of 11 I deleted from the computer was most likely from the DVD anyway, so this is not surprising.
I tried to download 11 from the Adobe website but had trouble finding the correct download page. I had to create a new password, it had been a while since I visited that website. This should be easy, I'll try again. Any tips?

Paul,
Because you have a boxed version of PSE 11, you need to contact Adobe Customer Care. They will help you. Here is their Help phone number.

I thought this thread had run its course... I was getting Grants Tools' Channel Mixer to work but somehow it doesn't work any more. I've re-read this thread a couple of times and tried uninstalling and reinstalling Grants Tools, to no avail.
Is there a list of the various PSE versions showing which ones work with Grants Tools? I'm thinking of upgrading my 13.
