I have a file which I have saved as both psd and tiff with a transparent background; in order to satisfy sites which don't support these file types, I am also attempting to save the file as a bitmap! Having opened the resulting file, I find it has a White background, so I have opened the layers tab and selected the transparency option which changes the "Background Layer" to "Layer 0", and I am then able to "select" the (white) background and remove it, fine but when I now attempt to "save as", the window opens as a Tiff! Changing the "Save as Type" to "BMP", the white background re-appears and I'm unable to save without it! Grrr! I have created bitmap transparencies in the past and can't recall having any such problem in doing so. Can anyone get me out of this endless loop?

Are you sure they are BMP files and not PNG files that allow transparent backgrounds.
Could you please post a BMP file with a transparent background that you have previously done.

Thanks for pressing my re-set button fotofrank, I've had some kind of brain seizure; it should have been a "Gif" file! oy veh!
