Because the image I am working with is fairly big (25"w x 10"h) I am ending up with many layers, probably 50 or 60 by now. While I don't want to lose the versatility of this image, I also don't want to accidently lose parts or all of the image.I read that saving as .tiff will prevent that. Is that true?

Hi Pat, If you are working with files with many layers, I would suggest taking advantage of two features Adobe introduced back in PSE 15 -- Layer Groups and Color Coding. Layer Groups:Layer Groups are used to organize your layers when you have too many of them by placing similar/related layers into a group (folder). As Layer Groups can be collapsed, the ending result is a layer stack which is manageable, one which looks neat and tidy, with the bonus of free space in the Layers panel. Last by not least, Layer Groups make hiding/showing several layers at once a piece of cake because each group has its own visibility icon. Color Coding:
You can color-code your layers to make it easier to identify those which are related. Here is some more information on these two features . . . Layer grouping and color coding (Help) Manage layers (Help)

Hi Pat, I am at a loss for how to answer your post. Saving an Image in PSD or TIFF will preserve the layers as you left them. It doesn't accidentally do anything to impact the image. When you save as a tiff you need to check layers. "Because the image I am working with is fairly big (25"w x 10"h) I am ending up with many layers, probably 50 or 60 by now." The number of layers does not impact the Dimension of the image??? What versatility are you talking about?

Thank you for your thoughts and answers. I think I am okay with all these layers so far. I was concerned that there might be a limit to the number one could use. There probably is, but whatever it is I must be okay because the image is doing fine.

I'm glad to hear your image is doing fine Pat! As you correctly surmised, there is an actual limit (as there must be), but most commonly we encounter the limits of our machines before the limits imposed by PSE. Carry on.

I am intrigued as well at the number of layers. Are you scrapbooking Pat or can you tell us what you are working on?
