Hello i am new to photoshop, have just invested in the CC 2021 version, have done some basic photo restoration of scratches and blemishes with much success. I want to Colourise the background trees and foreground grass in a B&W wedding photo, I think if done well it could look very dramatic. I have read several articles on the subject and the colourising selection tool seems the way to go, but fotofrank in this forum, discusses a threshold adjustment layer, can’t find much on this, would this be a better way to go. Would love to find a tutorial I could follow for this project. thanks in advance

Hi reddwarf4ever, welcome to PSE&M! Glad to have you here. I'm not sure which discussion by fotofrank you are talking about. I sent a PM to him bringing this thread to his attention. He has been using Photoshop for a long time and is an expert at it. He's best qualified to address your inquiry. As a side note, . . . I am also a Photoshop user and am interested in what he has to say.

Hi reddwarf4ever - Welcome to the site. I am not sure what you are talking about when you say "the colourising selection tool"? Is it the Color Range under Selection? Using a color range selection on a black and white image could be a challenge. I have used and discussed using a threshold adjustment layer to create a mask that can be used on other layers. In the example below, I created a mask using a threshold adjustment layer and then used it on a single solid color adjustment layer to create the image below. The threshold adjustment layer did the majority of the work, however it did need a little tweaking.
Good Luck on your project.

Did some research into “ created a mask using a threshold adjustment layer and then used it on a single solid color adjustment layer “ cant seem to get anywhere with this, any chance of some steps to help guide me ? Here is a link to the TIFF file.....want to colourise all except the group......thanks www.dropbox.com/s/s9y7pv808unvynv/group-27-E-CMYK-Auto%20Tone%20%26%20contrast.tif?dl=0P.S. Based on the image you provide - the threshold adjustment layer will never work as you have no separation in the image.
I would suggest that you do the following
1. Change the image mode to RGB color from CMYK color. Is there a reason you are using CMYK for a Black and White image 2. Duplicate the Image 3. Go to Filter Neural Filter and select/activate colorize 4. Mask out the people on this layer to allow the B&W to show back thru
For an added bonus clean up the sky and do a sky replacement.
