Surely not all On1 programs are as crash prone as the Effects programs.
We have Perfect Effects 9 and On1 Effects 10 installed on several Windows 7 machines.
A few of these machines are tricked out and powerful and have zero problems with anything else.
No matter the machine, whenever I use either of the On1 programs, Perfect Effects 9 or On1 Effects 10, the program always crashes when the image is saved; most times the work manages to get saved, but not always.
I have to really want something done in Effects to bother with the hassle of it crashing with every save.
After a crash, when I reopen the program, first, it pops up with this silly crash report window that is a complete useless joke; I "X" that away and then have to wait for the silly welcome window to build so that I can "X" it away; then, I click Open and have to completely re-navigate back to the folder I was working in.
Open the program > edit a single image > save the image > CRASH > wash, rinse, and repeat > one image at a time.
I have tried uninstall/reinstall and even tried different downloads and it is always the same.
I have sent countless crash reports over the years and never have had a response; same for the several emails to customer service =never a response.
This behavior with two programs and across several machines has done little for my confidence in their programs.
Has anyone else experienced these same difficulties ?
Are their other programs as problematic ?

Most On1 programs have 2 methods of operation: 1) stand alone & 2) plug in Does this issue occur on both methods?

I can only use the programs as stand alone as all my Elements versions are 32-bit and will not acknowledge the 64-bit plugin. All machines are 64-bit Windows 7, some are Pro and some are Home Premium. I know these two programs are a bit dated, but the situation has been there since they were shiny new. Both are the full-fledged versions and not the watered-down limited feature versions.

I've found Effects 9 to be very stable but chose to uninstall Photo 10 because it was so slow. I've also found On1 support to be very responsive personally. I'm using Windows10 but that was an upgrade on my current computer so I think Effects 9 should be fine on Windows 7. I find the On1 products to need memory or they will be sluggish.
Curious, in Effects 9 are you selecting to edit a copy or the original file when starting your edits. I always edit a copy with the JPEG options.

Curious, in Effects 9 are you selecting to edit a copy or the original file when starting your edits. I always edit a copy with the JPEG options. I get my PSD layer stack edited up to the point that it is ready for Effects and then save the layered PSD. I open the PSD in Effects and save it back as a PSD. Effects flattens the PSD stack and adds the Effects as a second layer; so, what I end up with is a PSD "Background" layer that is all of my work up to that point, with the Effects being a layer above that. It saves as "Copy" so my layered PSD is unmolested. Once back in Elements, I drag the Effects layer on top of my layered PSD and then discard the PSD that Effects created. I have never experimented with just loading a jpeg in Effects and saving as a jpeg; but then, I would lose the image quality advantage of working with PSD for that layer.

Wish I could be more help but since your workflow and filetype is different than mine I think submitting a help ticket thru their website (https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=213758) is probably your best bet for a resolution.

Thanks; I may try that; maybe they will surprise me and respond. In the mean time, although the program claims PSD capabilities, I may try a few plain-jane jpegs and see how that works.

I hate to be the negative one here, but.. Given that you are running Windows 7 and an old version of On1, I doubt if you will get much support. I have found On1 apps to be generally buggier and more crash prone than the Adobe apps, although I find that to be improving over time and with new releases.
