That is the question.

Need some good links to resources on painting and cloning with lighter colors over darker...or best work arounds.
This does not happen often to me, but just enough to be irritating.

Hi chuck ,
I guess I do not understand what you trying to do, as the paint and clone tools work regardless of the relative lightness of the image to be changed. A little more information about what you are doing and what the result is would help us to understand and hopefully provide meaningful assistance.
