Quokka, small marsupial native to Rottnest Island. Too cute. Size of a small cat? Yes, that sounds about right. They are semi-nocturnal, and very friendly, the Dutch explorers who named the island Rottnest thought they were giant rats, ie rats nest island, sometime back in 1696. |

Had a lovely walk with young friends today. I saw a male and female mallard on a pile of dried cattails. I am not sure if she is nesting or just lazing.   |

iPhone 14 Pro (although I always loved taking photos with my P&S, I abandoned it when I got my last iPhone.) Having a phone camera always just a grab away, the P&S became redundant. And besides, the camera on my phone is much better than my P&S. I'm glad it has an anti-shake function because it's not as easy to keep a phone steady as it is a camera. Photographed 6:10 a.m. EST April 21, 2024 I have night lights all over the house. When I walk through the house at night, I seldom turn on a light because the night lights are sufficient. As I was walking through this morning, I noticed this interesting shadow caused by the night lights. After trying to get a shot without my body shadow in it, I turned off one night light, but that didn't help much, so I had to change angles. But then the wall decoration was a problem... This is one of my first attempts - after I turned off the flash (with the flash on, I couldn't get anything - DUH) This photo is as it came off the phone - no photoshopping  6:25 a.m. I had a little more natural light at this point. Dawn was coming in through the window in the room behind this room. I really like how this one came out - I can even deal with that wall decoration 'butting in' to my composition First, I tried a longer shot, but my shadow was in the photo - that's why these photos are at an even stronger angle - trying to keep that body shadow out. I tried to keep that wall decoration out of the shot, but finally gave up and incorporated it. This photo is not photoshopped, but it is cropped at the bottom to get the junk from the table out of the photo. It was difficult to decide which item in the photo I should concentrate on to be the one that was straight - I hate when things lean in my photos, but decided I had to choose something to concentrate on - so I chose the real lamp, not the shadow. Now that it's up here, I am satisfied at how straight everything in the photo is. And, I really like the clarity of the photo using the ambient light.  I was amazed at what the camera could do with these dark shots although it kept warning me "keep still" LOL. I do notice a lack of sharpness in the above photo - however, the camera did a pretty good job considering I didn't 'listen' to it - I'm sure I didn't 'keep still' - which is really hard to do at my age.

Clive - great shots. Although Mallards are common in Wisconsin, I haven't seen many of them in Florida. I don't know what kind of ducks we have visiting our swimming pool - they look like female Mallards, but when they come in what I assume are mating pairs, there are no green heads on any of them. And I don't think their beaks are orange, either. They are back in the pool. If they show up today, I'll take a closer look at the beaks. Photographed 2023. Excuse the quality - it's a very small crop from a larger photo. They were headed to the swimming pool, so the photo was from a longer view...

I really like how this one came out - I can even deal with that wall decoration 'butting in' to my composition I wonder what it would look like in B/W, Janice......but I seem to remember that you prefer color.  |

they look like female Mallards, I think it is a female mallard with young ones. I have never seen the male mallard hang arounds while the female incubates but it is possible she is just resting as well. This is one of my first attempts - after I turned off the flash (with the flash on, I couldn't get anything - DUH) This photo is as it came off the phone - no photoshopping I love this. Very arty. Kind of stuff you'd see in an arty gallery. |

Yes Helen I prefer color - because the world is in color, but I can see where b/w can really make something very artsy

Today's photo is for BuckSkin. Windy? At ~1 PM I stopped my truck to take a pic of the whitecaps on the NW pond. Just after noon the wind was blowing at 80 to 100 km/hr ... that's 50 to 60 mph. No protected hollers here.  |
