these five "first steps" might be useful for all of us. Thanks for the link. Good points. Obviously, we all remove flaws and blems (retouching), but of those five, contrast and cropping are important to me. I sometimes "bulk" crop to a fixed L x W format, but usually crop each photo individually so the length and width are what pleases my eye the most. I'd probably add a sixth point: levels. Not often that I don't "mine" details out of the shadows and dark areas. Thanks again! Clive

Saturation and contrast a really good tools; often I use them both positively and negatively. When there's an interesting subject in an interesting background rather than creating a simple vignette I'll mask the subject increasing saturation or vibrance and contrast; then apply the same mask only inverted and SLIGHTLY decrease saturation and contrast.
