Thanks to Tony for making us really think about what makes a good image - and this doesn't just apply in black and white of course, but concentrating on shape and form for b&w images is so important. So, for a bit of fun, let's turn that on its head for now, and I'd like all the images in this month's challenge to include something in motion. It may be the main subject, it may be something in the background (grasses, leaves or traffic for example) or it may be the camera that is moving. Have fun and experiment. What thinking in b&w should do is mean you can't just get away with using colours to create a pleasing blurred effect, I suspect that the resultant images will still need some recognisable form. But lets see what your creative juices produce; I look forward to seeing what comes, and please post both what did work and what didn't. I must admit that I've lost my photographic mojo a little bit in recent months, so I apologise that I haven't been contributing much lately, but finally I'll be doing a bit more traveling throughout July so really hope that this kick starts me back.

I've lost my photographic mojo a little bit in recent months Gosh Alex, hope that returns. Good luck! So to open this up, I set a flower arrangement (daisies and hosta leaves) on the floor in low-ish light. With camera on a tripod, the lens was zoomed over the 4-second exposure. (ISO 50 and f22). So nothing was moving in this photo, but the focal length changed over the exposure. Will play more this evening.

Good subject Alex. I rarely take pics of things in motion but one I do very often is one I've been involved in keeping running (it runs historic oil wells and has been doing so for over 100 years). Curiously I don't think I've ever tried converting one of the many pics I have to B&W but I do like the result. Converted using an Acros preset in Lightroom - will have to try shooting in-camera as being a Fuji it will shoot Acros B&W Tony

Hey, do you guys see this?? It's moving by itself!! I borrowed this beautiful hand-made fortune board from a friend to see if I could get the pointer to go off on its own. I love that the hand-made board has two "V"s and no "Y", and I very much dislike that I didn't get my reflection out of the crystal ball. I'll try to come up with something more appropriate for the theme in the remaining couple weeks. Thanks for the theme Alex!

Suprised no one has posted a waterfall yet as they are usually good for showing some motion. Here's a small falls taken in the fall - camera hand-held on a rock 1/10th sec exposure - converted in Silver Efex Pro 3 . More water in motion anyone? Tony

More water in motion anyone? Newfoundland, 2006. Late evening. 20-second exposure.

Helen, nice capture of the wave action which seems to be accentuated by B&W.

Thank you all for your great entries so far, some lovely and inspiring examples. Just a couple of very quick acknowledgements: Clive, great varied sets, offering both the technique of zooming plus the mysticism of the Inukshuk. Tony, exceptional detail and I love how the motion allows you to see the detail through the flywheel. Frank, brilliant and bonkers in equal measure. Bill, loving your inventiveness, hope it doesn't spell out anything too spooky. Tony, Clive, Helen, Pete, all great examples that show that, yes, waterflow works really well in mono.

Have tried quite a few subjects for this challenge but never got anything that worked. Not sure if this works either but I kind of like it. Constructive criticism is certainly welcome. A slight camera movement caused the architectural lines of the houses to shift. Not sure how well it will be able to be noticed or if it just looks like a poorly focused image. You need to click on it to see the shift.
