Looking for advice and insight. As I move back into Photography and now using PSE 2021 on a MacBook Air (last used PS version CS5). I ran the Organizer and it was a mess of folders due to how the Mac stores them. By the end of the year, I will abandon my Windows machine and hopefully add a Mac Mini for my desktop machine. Not sure if I will want to use Bridge or the Organizer in PSE. Bridge is free btw now. Trying to understand an approach with this in mind. I like that photos taken with my iPhone synch using iCloud Photos. Images with from my camera can be placed in separate folders and not imported into Photos. Is the simple answer if I am going to use iCloud Photos, I'll end up with a mess of folders? What advice and insight do people have? I have looked at a few articles of Apple for reference. Change where your files are stored in Photos on Mac
Where are the photos I imported into Photos on my Mac?

I have struggled with this choice for some time. I have decided to use Bridge rather than Organizer. Bridge works with the folder structure on your HD's. Organizer is a catalog system. This means that it wants to take charge of the whole process. But, catalogs are too fussy for me.
So, I bring all my photos into another folder on an external drive on my MacMini and then proceed to make backups to at least one other external drive. My internal drive is not big enough to hold all the photos that I would want to have there.
Then I put them into the folder where I want them using Finder. I have mine organized by year and if needed month.
Bridge then just takes a look and does it's thing.
Also, I like the ratings, labels, and keyword system in Bridge. YMMV here of course. At least these are my views on the subject. Good luck!

cjt tell me what do you use for backup from one external drive to another. Is it something like None, I use Finder and do it the old-fashioned way. I simply back up the folders I know that have changed to another external drive. I let Finder sort out the copies thing. But I don't have a great number of photos, let's say 15K at most. If I were to use a sync system it would be Carbon Copy Cloner which I do use to back up entire system. You can set it up to copy/check a particular folder. cjt

Hi Stinson I’ve used Bridge with Elements since about 2007. I have never used The Organizer. I like Bridge because it allows me the freedom to control my files. All my images are downloaded to my Mac Mini. Those that are processed and kept are moved to an external hard drive (2 drives are used). The raw files ( including those that were not processed) are moved to another external hard drive. A separate external hard drive holds all my slides, my father’s slides and my father-in-law’s slides. I use Mac’s Time Machine to back up my Mac Mini and all of my external drives. That drive is 4 tb in size. The beauty is that everything can be done through Bridge. I can use Bridge to move files, to trash files, to view, etc. One thing to keep in mind about Bridge is that it provides you with tools to organize, to assign keyword, etc but you must put the time in. It is not an organizer you must decide where to place your images etc. But, I would be lost without it. Good luck.

You have convinced me to look a little closer at Bridge. I have had it for several years and have only opened it a time or two just to see what it was.

So how are people like PeteB connecting the drives to their Mac Minis? Using a drive Bay or just using two drives connected at the same time. Why not use a synch software instead of Time Machine? Thanks everyone for the insights so far.
