Is there a way to not have Organizer make a duplicate every time I open a file from Organizer with Photoshop.
I would like to work on Original and not keep adding versions in a stack.
I work in psd format and then Save As when I need to use a jpg or png format
Lightroom Classic gives an option to work on original, copy, etc. Is this possible in Elements?

Hi clemsonjim,
I'm no Organizer expert but I don't think there is a way around it. Whenever I do Organizer > Edit with Photoshop, Elements creates a copy of my file. (If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.)

My work around presently is to use the information tab and open location of file and open directly from folder location. Extra steps, but keeps all the extra copies from filling up my catalog.

No help from me clemsonjimAbout 15 years ago I tried Organizer and it seemed impossibly awkward for someone who takes a LOT of photos. I rely on a semi-intuitive File Explorer [Windows] system using folder and image-file keyword names. And rely on software called Everything to search. ( Everything is only a Windows program and I think you are a Mac user.) Good luck Clive |

My work around presently is to use the information tab and open location of file and open directly from folder location. Extra steps, but keeps all the extra copies from filling up my catalog. Yes, that's a way to avoid these copies.I have a small Organizer catalog, mainly for troubleshooting purposes. For my personal work I use Lightroom Classic which has more options as to the External Editor. |

Thanks in advance for you help. No, there is no way to avoid creating a 'copy' (naming it a 'duplicate' is misleading). You may have noticed that if you use an alternative editor in the preferences of the organizer, you'll get the same result. The reason is that for Adobe, an original is 'sacred' and should never be overwritten by the program itself. Adobe does not want to be held responsible by the disparition or overwriting of an original picture, even if you have preferences for that choice. Nobody should be able to pretend that the user was not informed enough of the consequences. So, it's not a thechnical issue, it's a legal one. Even if you are tempted to demonstrate that it would be a marketing 'plus' to convice PSE users loving the organizer to subscribe to Photoshop, there is practically no chance to succeed. Using Bridge give you more choice. Using Lightroom preferences may be accepted for the 'non destructive' and parametric workflow. Even then, I would use Dawmatt's Elemental plugin to open in the Elements editor without creating a 'copy' first. So, the answer may be that since opening in Photoshop implies creating a 'copy' in a stack, it's easy to 'flatten' the stack after the edition to only keep the edited version. If you are shooting mainly jpegs, is it really important to delete the original jpeg while keeping the resulting psd or png?
If you are shooting raw while having Photoshop, I don't know exactly what happens since I am away from my main computer with only Elements and Bridge installed. From Bridge, I can choose to open either in the PSE raw plugin or in the Photoshop one.
