This is a strange one. Have trawled the net with no avail. When I open an image from my iphone, resize it to something sensible and duplicate layer, then run Silver efex, it just crashes. Ok with images from my camera. Running PE 2018 on win 10. Have also tried saving it with PE to jpg and then opening that but still crashes. Any ideas anyone? it has got me flummoxed!

HappyScot,
I also have the Nik Collection (v4). My apologies but I'm a bit confused. Here are some questions to start the troubleshooting ...
- Which version of the NiK Collection do you have? - Do you mean this plug-in is causing Elements to crash? - What about the other plug-ins in the NiK Collection? - Which iPhone version are you using? - When did this problem start?

1. PE 2020 2. silver efex pro 2 3. Yes. Happens with all Nik plugins with iphone 11 images. 4. All other plugins work ok with iphone images. 5. don't know if I have ever used Nik with iphone image before! 6. camera images work fine (unfortunately I only had my iphone with me today!). And I can't go back with camera to re-take! 7. Have tried resizing phone image at 72dpi to 300 dpi then resizing to sensible 2500 pixels long side so smallish image but still u/s. 8. When it goes into the Nik screen it just stops after loading image when it is in the processing(?) stage - screen is still all grey at this point. It then just hangs until I end it with task manager or I get the message to produce crash report.

Just found a solution - this has taken me hours........................
If I email the image to myself from my phone .................it all works perfectly!!!!
How strange is that? I cannot fathom that out! Perhaps you can? But in the meantime my bacon is saved. I can at least just email all the images across the deep divide to myself!

HappyScot, Glad to hear you found a workaround. Kudos to you! While I waited to hear from you, I applied Silver Efex to some photos I had taken with my iPhone. No crash occurred! And to make the waters murkier, they were already saved on my computer. Go figure! As this is a NiK Collection issue, I'm moving this thread to the Other Software board. Hopefully someone will shed a light on this "phenomenon".

Thanks Sepiana for your support. I always think if you can talk about your problem to someone else, you sometimes can come up with a solution yourself! Often worked in a work environment. And so it did here - or at least a workaround.

Just out of curiosity, check the unmolested e-mailed image for metadata and see if it has been stripped --- I suspect it has. Also, take the -un-e-mailed- iPhone image that was giving you trouble, if the metadata is important, duplicate the image; now, strip the metadata from the duplicate, load it in NIK, and see if it now works. If it does work with the metadata stripped, then we will know how to handle this situation in the future. If you want to replace the metadata within the finished image, load the original (that still has the metadata) in Elements, load the finished image also in Elements; now, on the finished image, select all layers and drag them on top of the original image, then save this, either in layers or flattened according to your choice. Whatever image is the backgound/first layer/base governs the metadata content of the entire image. Let us know if my idea works.

This is simply an FYI I have also experienced Nik crashes, but it does not happen often. It seems to have something to do with the specific image, as the same filter does not crash when used on a different file. Simply altering the file in some way may avoid the crash. At least that has worked for me.

Happens to me as well and sometimes causes PS to freeze. Still trying to determine why it happens sometimes and not others.

BuckSkin. I have checked the meta data on both sets of images - both emailed ones and others have still got the same meta data. Had a quick go tonight - thought at first it was only landscape images it affected - portrait ones were ok. But some landscape images , well 1 so far, has worked - unfortunately it was not the one I wanted to process. Will investigate further when I have more time. But that was a good and sensible idea. May try with another new set of images....

HappyScot, out of interest, what image format is your iphone saving to? If they are in the default HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Format) they can cause problems with other software. You can go to your iphone settings/Camera/Formats and choose "most compatible" to save as a standard jpg. You could try converting the HEIC image before using it with Silver Efex pro. That might have happened when you e mailed it. Otherwise you can use another software to convert to a jpg.
Kind regards Chris

Thanks, Chris. Will have to check as that could possibly be what is causing some of my crashes.

Hi Chris. Thank you for that. One of my friends at the camera club(virtual) suggested that as well. Exactly what you said. Will have time today to try it out. But you both have hit it on the head I think. Although that does not explain why it still crashed after I had opened in PE and then saved as a jpg, then opened the new jpg!
