I,ve watched a couple videos about using the refine edge tool to do quick selections. In the videos a qiuck selection is drawn with a lasso, refine edge is selected, set on overlay, then it is run over the selected area. the brush leaves a trail of red and when the mouse button is released the red disappeaars and the selection snaps to the ragged edges.
But when I try it I leave a trail on black which just sits there, not giving me anything to work with.
what I,m talking about can be seen at the 6;10 mark on the this video
what am I doing wrong?

Based on the information you provided, I have no idea what you are doing or what you are doing wrong. The video is about 5 years old but the tool work the same. So just to level set You made a selecting a pixel based layer and see the marching ants You enter refine edge and the refine edge dialog box opens You set the VIEW mode in the dialog box to overlay - the red background Now you are painting with the tool in the dialog box to refine the edge Correct?

yes, thats what Im doing, I'll try again.
ok, it works as long as I leave the dialog box on the screen. If I hit ok after chosing the brush it does not work. So once aagain it appears I learned something.
thanks

When you click on the ok you are telling elements you are done using refine edge.
