An example of some of the challenges of through-the-windshield photography. The At Grade railroad crossing ahead is R.J. Corman Railroad's Memphis Line, a 113 mile former L&N line between Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Cumberland City, Tennessee. Purchased from Seaboard Coast Line in 1987, it includes a twelve mile branch line that runs north from Russellville, Kentucky, to the Logan Aluminum rolling mill near Lewisburg. From here East to CSX Memphis Junction in Bowling Green = 15.4 miles. From here West and South to Cumberland City, Tennessee = 68.8 miles. Grain is the major freight on this line. The truck in the distance is owned by MSR Transport Services of Monroe, Ohio, pulling a MAC Tri-axle Flatbed with FasTrak Conestoga Rolling Tarp. To anyone who has ever fought with trying to tarp a loaded semi trailer, these Rolling Tarp trailers are a blessing; once the cargo is loaded and strapped, you just pull the accordian-like curtain to the rear, secure it, and your load is tarped. There are also Curtain Side trailers that have a rigid roof and rear door structure and roll-up curtains on the sides. This photo was taken from inside a vehicle through a window covered in bug guts, road film, reflections, and glare. We drove through a locust swarm once, talk about bug guts and icky views of what they look like from inside the car, getting them off the windscreen was quite a lot of work. Luckily we had taken precautions to keep them from getting through the front car grille. Anyone care for roasted locusts?
