This is just beautiful, Lillias! Aside from the overall presentation and message; you have achieved a perfect tonal match. Additionally, selecting hair is always a challenge. Would you mind telling us how you went about creating your selection....and perhaps harmonizing the tone?

I am off to attend to dinner just now but I will be happy to answer your questions later tonight once I get my thoughts together...so watch this space...

OK In answer to the first question - Regarding the hair of this subject - I extracted the subject from the background using the select subject option from the Select menu. I wasn’t too happy with the initial result. It wasn’t that bad, just not good enough I felt to put on a lighter background. So in an effort to improve things, making sure I had the refined edge mask selected in the layers panel I chose a spatter brush from the default brushes and carefully dabbed here and there around the edges of the hair alternating between using white or black as the colour to either add to or take away from the hair till I was satisfied. I was fortunate in this case with the type of hair I was dealing with as it lent itself to this kind of treatment. The second question relating to the toning - I took my lead from the subjects skin tone. First I used a gradient - ES Rivendell 13 by Elvensword from Deviant Art and his 75 Photoshop Gradients. I also chose an image keeping the subjects skin tones in mind and placed the image from Pixabay on top of the gradient and reduced the opacity of the image to 55% to lighten the tone. I chose the brown colour of the text from image and that’s it really. I am a visual person so if it helps see the examples below.

Thank you for your detailed explanation, Lillias. You did an excellent job on the hair as it really wasn't an easy background for you to work with. Your explanation and accompanying visuals are very helpful.
While I was especially interested in reading how you selected the hair I find your toning technique to be so creative. Placing your image ABOVE the gradient is something I would never think to do. Seeing how it softened the tones in the original image and caused it to fade into the background seems the perfect approach. Thank you also for mentioning the gradient set you used.

The entire effect of this project is spot on. Great innovative use of PSE. And we haven’t even mentioned that word art…
