Blue jay They get one handful of peanuts (in the shell) every morning. Today, they got two as I was enticing them to perch in the trees before flying down to the walk to get the seeds. It worked.

So that’s how you pay your models, in peanuts 🥜! HA HA! Good one Jacki! And they still complain. If we forget and the weather is snowy or cold, they will land on our deck or deck railing and squawk until we toss them a few peanuts. They are such pretty birds and we just love having them come by all winter.

According to the Cornell site, females and males are almost identical.
Even though these birds have been a big part of our lives when we’re feeding birds, and all I ve ever seen looked like that photograph, I wanted to make sure I was accurate. That Cornell site is my go-to site.

We have Blue Jay around here aplenty, but I must say they are by far the most elusive and standoffish when it comes to getting a photo.
At least in our area, the females are a much lighter shade of blue and with more grey.

are the females blue as well? As Janice noted the males and females are identical at least to the untrained eye. The very young ones are not as vibrant of course. The colors are amazing aided in this case by sidelight and reflected light off the snow.

Remember watching wildlife documentary and from memory was it the male that had slightly more blue around the eyes.?

the females are a much lighter shade of blue and with more grey. There is no obvious difference in adult blue jays that I can see. All About Birds makes no reference to differences between males and females. There can be five adults in our yard at one time (three yesterday) and there might be subtle difference in color hues/values but it is not obvious. They are sure pretty and great to have around all winter.
