Thanks to dandc, the identity is no longer a mystery. Balloon Vine Read on; more photos and information follows. After hours of searching and looking at countless photos, I have had no luck in identifying these. One thing is for certain, we have a good crop of them; they have completely covered the firewood pile and a large hard-to-mow area adjacent. There are not just a few of those pods; there are thousands. The pods are about ping pong ball sized. Wednesday_10-November-2021 If anyone knows what they are, please enlighten me.

The pods look like Chinese Lanterns except the pointy part is at the wrong end. Humm ...

Yes, my thought was Chinese Lanterns, too. And they spread like wildfire. HEREThe skeletons look spectacular. The seeds are inside of those. A friend has a phone, where he can take a photo of any plant, leaf, etc. And the name and details of the subject come up on the screen. Technology can be amazing.

Yes, I use the Google app 'lens' which is an option in Google photos. Result: Immediately 50 proposals in which a single totally matching photo. Bad luck: it's in Japanese and I don't know how to get a link... I may have to take a photo of my smartphone screen! The Web Site for this image is blog.goo.ne.jp
That's not all. Google offers the option to find 'similar images'. First page: - one orange bra - one top of orange WC cover.
May be Artificial Intelligence has integrated sense of humour.
Edit: I also tried with another botanical search engine advised by my gardener: plant.net. No success.
Finally found the full link for the image.

michelb, that sure does look like my mystery pods; does it say anywhere what they are ? Sorry, but I can't even recover some text in Japanese for translation... Another search on plant.net with the recovered Japanese image does not work either.
EDIT/
Well, I took my wife's phone, shot the Google lens search proposal on my own phone; I gathered the image saved on her Google photo account and here it is.

If that ain't it, it is mighty close. If it is it, then it may be my ticket out of poverty; it says you can eat it, rub it on all manner of external ailments, swallow it and smoke it for other ailments, is an excellent laxative, and makes a good salve for piles (I hadn't heard of piles in years; old people used to talk of others having it; I guess another Google search is in order.). I guess my next assignment, should I agree to take it, is to snip off a couple of those pods and investigate and photograph their insides. I wonder why I never noticed the vines when they were green; I was not aware of their existence until I noticed we were covered up with those dried up brown pods.

Balloon Vine
We have a good crop of these vines and they seem to be thriving under the Biden administration. I snipped off a random section of vine, approximately eighteen inches long, to bring inside for scientific investigation, and counted twenty-eight seed pods. The Balloon Vine is a strongly overgrown, perennial herbaceous climbing plant that sometimes can become lignified at it's base. If it has nothing to climb on, it will spread across the ground. It is possessed of many medicinal qualities, both internal and external. Cardiospermum Halicacabum Note: Friday_11-February-2022_06:19 AM:CST This link should work now.Wednesday_17-November-2021

Seeds of the Balloon Vine These seeds are identical in size to a peppercorn and very much resemble the much larger Buckeye and Chestnut. 18-55mm lens at 55mm w/44mm Extension Tube & Polaroid +4 DiopterBalloon Vine_Seeds_Cutaway View 18-55mm lens at 55mm w/65mm Extension Tube & Polaroid +10 Diopter
