I have noticed, though, that in PSE the shortcut keys sometimes stop working for no reason I can figure out. Same here; most peculiar!

And I thought it was just my pc. Sometimes they start working again if I do the Edit>Preset Manager>Done trick sometimes I have to restart the program before normal service is restored!

msmart, Now that you mentioned the Soft Light blending mode I thought of something. I don't remember where I got this but here is a way to lighten a dark photo and make it pop. 1. Create a new layer. 2. Fill it with white. 3. Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light. 4. Reduce the Opacity if the effect is too strong. 5. Duplicate the white layer if you want a stronger effect. Step 3. You can also use the 'Overlay' blending mode. I think Overlay often works better. Your mileage may vary.

You are correct!
You can also use the Overlay blending mode. Both Overlay and Soft Light blending modes belong to the Contrast group. Blending modes in this group will darken the shadows and lighten the highlights at the same time, thus increasing contrast. Soft Light is just a softer, more subtle version of Overlay. However, Soft Light has something else in its favor when it comes to increasing contrast. Unlike Overlay, it can clip colors to pure black or white.
