On the old EV forum there as a tutorial call "Making Dark Photos Pop". Unfortunately I didn't save it offline but only used a bookmark to reference it. Does someone have the steps they can post here? Thanks.

Sepiana, thanks for the links. I think my photo doesn't have enough detail. I tried the first link you provided and the first layer helps some but after that, it's just noise.
They did help me remember bits of the tutorial, you duplicate the layer, inverse the new layer, apply Gausian blur to the new layer then change the new layer to Soft Light. Something to that effect as it does help some. Again, my photo (which is actually a screen grab from a video I shot of a play that very dark (The Crucible)).
I'm glad to be here with everyone else mourning the closure of EV.
Thanks rapata and Bayla for chiming in as well.

msmart,
Now that you mentioned the Soft Light blending mode I thought of something. I don't remember where I got this but here is a way to lighten a dark photo and make it pop.
1. Create a new layer. 2. Fill it with white. 3. Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light. 4. Reduce the Opacity if the effect is too strong. 5. Duplicate the white layer if you want a stronger effect.

Is this what you are looking for.
1 Open Photo. Control J for duplicate 2 On top layer Control + Shift to desaturate 3 Control I to invert 4 Go to Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur. Make blur very large. 5 Change blend mode to Soft Light 6 Open a Levels Adjustment Layer and drag the right hand slide to the left to get result you want.
Had this written out in a book. Lucy I found it.

Stringbean, in Step 2 I think you meant On top layer Control + Shift + U to desaturate.

Hi I followed the Instructions from Sepiana,s link Fix Under Exposed Photos Fast. Ctrl J and put blend mode at Screen works but when I repeat this there is no new layer comes above the initial screen layer. I am using PSE 11. It seems so very simple but I must be doing something wrong again. Any ideas ? Thanks. Storm

Storm,
Once you have duplicated the background layer (Ctrl-J, Cmmd-J on a Mac) and changed the blending mode of this duplicate layer to Screen, your layer stack should look like this.
If your image is still too dark, you can increase the lightening effect by selecting the duplicate layer and duplicating it again (Ctrl-J, Cmmd-J on a Mac). This second duplicate layer will automatically have the blending mode of Screen.
NOTE: You can keep doing this (duplicating these layers) until you get the results you want.

Sorry Sepiana but I do select the duplicated Screen layer & duplicate it again with ctrl+ j but I get no layer1 copy. My layer stack remains exactly like your first example. If I leave the blend mode at Normal then I can do ctrl+j and I get layer 1 copy, but if I change the blend mode to anything including Overlay then I do not get a Layer 1 copy. Storm

The mode a layer is using has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you can duplicate a layer. I have noticed, though, that in PSE the shortcut keys sometimes stop working for no reason I can figure out.
Have you tried selecting layer 1, then right-clicking and selecting duplicate layer, or from the Layer menu, duplicate layer?
