Sunday_28-November-2021 The wife called me from her car in the driveway to alert me that there were deer in the yard. I eased out the door and took these photos. Handheld at 500mm; 1/125th second; f:6.3; ISO 6400 (Max for this camera) I was standing on the porch. Here is typical of what I had to work with: And this is as good as I could get with what I had to work with (most definitely not up to Clive's standard):

I have this handheld spotlight: www.amazon.com/dp/B076RWT7N8/?coliid=I1GAO8ZSDIISBQ&colid=1CVJKQJ7SXI8D&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_itIt weighs just about nothing; the batteries must be made of chicken feathers as the whole light is light as a feather. To be so light, I have never owned anything brighter; it will absolutely scorch the ground half-a-mile away. I have it in my mind to epoxy a GoPro bracket on it and rig that to a hot-shoe adapter so that I can attach it above the camera and be able to put some serious light on the subject. Thus, maybe I can get some decent photos instead of trying to pull a bit of detail out of the darkness.

Great idea, but as soon as you turn that light on - there will be nothing to take photos of because the guys will hightail it (like my pun?) -- maybe I should've said 'whitetail' it.

BuckSkin does your camera have a popup flash? At high ISO the weak popup flashes will light somewhat well in the dark. Funny, as I bought a similar powerful LED flashlight last summer. Amazing brightness. BTW, mine and a ΒΌ-inch female thread for mounting on a tripod. A simpler (? ?) alternative to " epoxy a GoPro bracket on it and rig that to a hot-shoe adapter so that I can attach it above the camera" is to have another person hold the flashlight, but not always possible. I am confused. Were the lighter deer photos you posted also taken in the dark and lightened or where they daytime photos? Thanks Clive

I am confused. Were the lighter deer photos you posted also taken in the dark and lightened or where they daytime photos? All of the photos I posted started out as dark as the dark example and I pulled them out of the darkness with DxO; of course, they all were extremely noisy. I do have pop-up flash if I can ever remember to try it. I need to set me up a target and practice when there are no real subjects out there.
