Sepiana 's weekly photo challenge (take two photos wide and zoomed in) reminded me of zooming on a subject during a long exposure. (I first did this on a Xmas-light-decorated church in about 1970 or so.) The town has a zillion LED lights in the Kinshelter park just down the street. So I went over this evening, set up the camera on a tripod and took a few 4-second exposures, zooming during the exposure. There is some shake. (The lights remind me of whippet 's recent post.)

I like this kind of abstract art, reminds me of string art, the sort done with little tacks and coloured strings.

These came out really good, Clive. I want to try this with my Christmas tree.

I want to try this with my Christmas tree. Give it a shot. My tree one was not great and binned it. First, I think 4 seconds was perhaps too long but try 2, 3 and 4 seconds. Just a hint that I did NOT follow. So (say) you use a 2 or 3-second exposure (and appropriate low ISO and high f -stop), start zooming BEFORE opening the shutter. Here's why: the main source of shake will be starting the zoom ring. If you start the zoom first, that wiggle will not be captured.

hmca Our tree ... the one I binned. I did play with levels a in ACR: increased exposure, reduce whites and brights, lightened shadows. WB was also tricky .. use AWB but then I fiddled with this in ACR a couple of times. Jazzed up overall saturation and then reduce yellows. The red and green in upper right are actually our neighbour's house lights. Have fun. Explain this to me: Our tree only has white LEDs, yet they come out different colors. It might be a 60-cycle thing.

pontiac1940 ......what's that saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure."? I'll be quite pleased if mine comes out that good.

I played with this a bit but not happy enough to post any yet. Will keep trying.

Wanted to keep one ornament in focus....and have straight lines of light....couldn't get that to work.

Good try Helen. If the zoom mechanism is a tad sticky or not smooth, it is hard to zoom with no shake. However, your result is still pleasing. Thanks for giving it a try.
