to start fresh
It may be too difficult to fix a filing mess you already have, but
- TODAY -
institute a new filing system and DO NOT DEVIATE - - take the time each day to name and file your photos/layouts
and, yes, I'm yelling at myself
After spending the last week - with only a minimal amount of files to go through -- so not as daunting as it sounds -- I had to rename, organize and choose layouts to get a book (or 2) prepared to be printed -
I truly realized how careless I had been in naming the layouts and in placing them in files

AMEN to that !
For organizing photos, the best tools in my arsenal are FastStone, Advanced Renamer, and Synchredible.
D.I.M. is a huge asset as well.
If you only have a single hard-drive (or SSD) in your machine, first, make sure everything is duplicated on another external drive, including the system; then, shrink the (C:) drive and create a separate partition for photos and all other data.
Migrate everything that is not of the system or installed programs to this new partition.
Now, shrink the (C:) partition again to about 15 to 20GB larger that the space used.
Create separate "root" folders for photos, video, and documents (and music) on your new partition.
Point the "Libraries" to specific folders within the appropriate root folders on your new partition.
I never use the "Libraries", but many programs just assume one does and so they are a necessary evil.
Now, for the rest of your life, never store anything in (C:); you life will be much easier.
