I've taken up a challenge to post a photo a week, Week 1's theme was bokeh.

Good focus on the foreground subject against the soft background - very nicely separated. Looks like you nailed the theme with that image, Jackie. Looks like it is going to be a great 52 weeks of challenges for you

Not sure what bokeh is - (they talk about it in digital scrapbooking and I still don't understand) ... but that photo is awesome

Nice start, Jacki. A photo a week sounds less daunting than a photo a day.....good luck and keep on sharing.

One of my scrapbooking sites had an “All About Me” series of challenges- one per week I.e., favorite artist In making the layouts in answer to the challenges, I compiled an entire chronicle of my life.
I am still thankful for that series of challenges.

Not sure what bokeh is - (they talk about it in digital scrapbooking and I still don't understand) ... but that photo is awesome "bokeh" is some trendy silly word that means blurred background. Some will extol the virtues of this lens or the other and claim that it produces such good bokeh; my take is that is pure hogwash; the attractiveness of a blurred background has more to do with the background itself and your distance from the subject, plus whatever f-stop you have chosen. Looking at jackscrap's dandelion example, notice that the subject is all crisp and sharp and completely isolated from the blurred background which just sort of melts away. Does that help explain it ?

Does that help explain it ? Better explanation than I've seen before. Blurred background has a real place in photography - look at how great it works with jackscrap's photo. Wouldn't have had half the impact without the blur.

Wouldn't have had half the impact without the blur. I totally agree.

And taken with my phone, I was quite chuffed! A little side story is that I was trying to blow on the thistle to try and catch some of it flying away, but I couldn't make it happen, ran out of puff...and as soon as I liberated the thing from its holding place it fell apart!

This is a pretty good article on the bokeh effect. There are many "bokeh" textures available which all seem to feature soft circles of color. You can substitute these textures or blend them with your background to get the bokeh effect.

Are we going to get to see the remaining 51 photos here ? Yes if I can keep up...don't know what next weeks theme is yet, stay tuned. Invitation to all to post your own interpretations of the weekly theme, I'll let you know what they are as soon as I know.
