Within a couple miles, this northbound train will return to single track at Palm, then pass under KY Hwy 78 and then under the new alignment of US Hwy 127; it will cross old Hwy 127 "at grade", then pass by Moreland Siding before returning to double track at Bowen and enter the South end of Danville Yard at Stewart's Lane and proceed to the North end for a crew change before heading North to Cincinnati or West to Louisville at the wye North of Danville.

Although I didn't capture every car in this train, every car I did capture has all 53' containers.

I find it interesting that just about every container is stenciled "Top of Stack ONLY", or "Stack Two High (or Three) ONLY"; like labeling a shipping package "Fragile" or "Do Not Bend", in real practice, all of these notices go out the window.

It is not uncommon on a ship with stacks of eight or ten high to have "Top of Stack ONLY" on the very bottom.

Take note of the odd car at right.
This car is purpose-made for hauling semi trailers.
The trailers cannot be driven onto the car; they must be lifted on and off the car.
Note the "fifth wheel" stand; the king-pin of the trailer latches into this exactly the same as the fifth wheel on a truck.

These cars consist of usually three or five units permanently connected to make one car.

Although not as common, cars can also consist of two, four, and even six, or seven, or more units.

This is the coupler end where the connected units can couple to other freight cars; there are two coupler ends per car, one at each end, an "A End" and a "B End" .

Look closely at the step and hand-rail of the right car and you can see the brake wheel.

The brake wheel is turned to manually set or release a brake so that the car will remain in place when uncoupled from the train.

On most modern railcars, the hand-wheel only sets a single brake.

This is one of the articulated joints between sections of the car.

Notice that a single wheel truck carries the joint.

This connection is permanent; and, regardless of how many articulated units, it is considered as a single car.

From what I gather, there are over 40,000 of these EMP shipping containers in America; all are 53-footers.

Norfolk Southern is the parent company and Union Pacific joined in later.

My understanding is that you can rent one (or all) of these containers, pay around $20/day, and it sit in your backyard until doomsday if that is what you desire.

It is up to the customer to pay for highway transport = getting it to and from the RxR terminal.

Any point-to-point RxR movement is a separate additional charge on top of the $20/day.

This $20/day move was brought on to prevent RxR-owned semi-trailers and shipping containers from disappearing into private/corporate non-RxR use; so long as your name is on the lease, it is costing you $20 per diem no matter where the container is or what it is being used for.

It is also an incentive to quickly load/unload the container and get it back to the RxR.

That made me think of another interesting fact about containers; especially in International shipping, there is very little "backhaul" business for them; so, like coal cars and livestock trailers, they are mostly empty on their return trip.

In International use, there is very little demand to haul American products back to China; and, in domestic American use, if they are being used to transport automotive parts and components, or some other manufacturing component to a factory, there is nothing there to be brought back.

In real life use, about the only thing that can almost always find a nearby backhaul is a flatbed semi trailer; everything else is loaded one way and empty return.
