In this photo, I am not sure where the horizontal line is - where the bird is landing or the direction the waves are going in?

To my eye I would say the direction of the waves. Here is my attempt:

To me, it’s the dark line because that’s where my eye landed. The shadow of the bird on the water looks better in the first photo. It should be off kilter because the bird is not a symmetrical object. I live on a pond and the waves go in all directions. Depends on the wind. Therefore, there is no right or wrong.

You are quite right Janice, there is no right or wrong, for sure! Here is the image using the dark line to define the horizontal. Right? Wrong? As you said, Neither! It is simply a nice image and one that I wish I had to opportunity to capture.

Great capture !
I am with the cat lady on this; there is no right or wrong.
The first image looks more natural.
Did you buy a coop full of ducks and pay some kid to turn them loose one at a time until this worked out ?
I could set there by the pond until my nose froze off and never have action like this.

These level things get complex and our eyes can play games. Here is how I see it...mainly the original is very close to level. To me the key is the feet and tail. The wave lines can throw us off.

You could try to flip and then adjust the horizon of the image.

Just one more voice to add to the confusion.....I liked Tom's edit, which when I look more closely is similar to Frank's. I do like that Frank's is following a left > right progression.

....well now my eyeballs are crooked! ...ahahaha....I have a whole lagoon full of seabirds to chase around........ Actually it is all Clive's fault because apparently the grass is greener one provincial border over (BC/Alta) and his birds/animals were so much better than mine, that I got camera envy and, after discussions with said photographer, I moved to his camera (Sony). Now the provincial challenge is on!!! btw, no fair using porcupines - I've never seen one in BC.
Thanks everyone for your comments and edits!

For what it is worth, when I first glanced at this on my phone it seemed clear to me that it was the dark line that would look best horizontal. But now I'm looking properly on a big screen and can see the ripples, anything other than making the ripples horizontal (i.e. like Tom and Frank have done) makes it look to me like it is landing downhill. But, as with everything photographic, it is all about the artistic preference of the artist...

In this photo, I am not sure where the horizontal line is I didn't do a thing to your duck except to add the perfectly horizontal line. Your sense of level when you snapped the shot was dead-on to my eye; I wish every shot I took was that accurate.

I wish every shot I took was that accurate. Well then, I won't mention that I took over 1,000 photos yesterday of which 97% will be trashed. In my defense, the lighting was very tricky and I was trying to photograph two unusual ducks ... so shot a LOT.
