not at all sure what they were looking for - but it seemed very important. Template: Syndee Rogers - used pretty much as designed - see template below

How do you get background colour on to the template, Janice. Or have I missed a tutorial. I haven't had time to catch up on tutorials yet.

The template came with the colors and embellishments. Because the template has each item on its own layer, each layer can be manipulated or clipped to something.
When I wanted to change the color of the mask (that wispy blue-green background) I opened a new layer above that layer, colored it with the paint bucket - then clipped those two layer's together. Make sure the new color layer is ABOVE the layer you wish to clip it to.
When I wanted to change the color of the heart, I did the same thing.
The pink behind the title is a brush - keep all brushing on its own layer so it can be manipulated or discarded. Sometimes when you grab the brush, you forget to open a new layer and the brushing goes on what ever layer you are on at the time. That can cause you grief if later you change your mind about the brushing.

TO CLARIFYActually, in looking back at my layer stack, I used a hue/sat adjustment layer to change the colors on the two background layers - they were the last two layers in the stack, so there was no need to clip the hue/sat layer to the background layer - otherwise, if the layer is in the middle of your stack, clipping is essential. However, the same could've been accomplished by clipping that tan color to the blue-green layer.
To change the color of the heart, I clipped a blue layer to the black heart

Thanks for explaining, Janice. And for taking the trouble of doing the example. This is what I can usually understand.
Thank you.
