I searched this question and came out more confused than before I started. (Major gripe = internet searches are becoming more and more useless; with our very first computer, way back about 2005, me knowing absolutely nothing about what I was doing, I could type a question and the first thing that came up would be the answer --- not so anymore --- just pages and pages of confusion and conflicting information.)
Are Pigeons, and therefore Doves, considered "Songbirds" ; or, are they a species all their own ?
The reason I wish to know is I have been trying to intelligently group my "Bird" keyword tags into sub-tags.
When things first started out ages ago, all Birds were just Bird; that soon became overwhelming; so, I added some sub-tags, such as Cardinal, Hawk, Crow, Buzzard, Turkey and so forth and so on.
That soon grew out of hand and thousands of unidentified birds were just Bird; so, I added an Unidentified Bird sub-tag.
Lately, I have been reorganizing with Songbird, Raptor, Upland Game Bird, Waterfowl, Crow and what have you; which just brought another question to mind --- an Owl is a predator; does that make it a Raptor ?

I may have stumbled on an answer: as per Wikipedia "Songbird" = "A songbird is a bird belonging to the clade Passeri of the perching birds (Passeriformes)." as per Wikipedia "Columbidae" = "Columbiformes is one of the most diverse non-passerine clades of neoavians"
So, if I read that correctly, Pigeons/Doves are NOT songbirds, right ?
And the owls ?

I got to thinking, some people around here are fanatics about dove hunting and eat them by the wheel-barrow load; so, I decided maybe I should check to see if they are considered an Upland Game Bird; sure enough, Pigeons and Doves are listed as Upland Game Birds. Although I cannot claim to not be a murderous individual, man or beast, I never shot a Dove in my life; it would be akin to shooting Noah in the Ark; I have no idea what the daily limit is, nor even if there is a limit; but, I have seen many a pickup bed absolutely full of Doves after a days hunting. I see far more women than men roaming the corn and bean fields during Dove season; but then, as a general rule, women have historically been a more bloodthirsty murderous lot than their male counterparts.

As per Encyclopedia Britannica - "owl, (order Strigiformes), any member of a homogeneous order of primarily nocturnal raptors" So, I guess Owls will go under Raptors.... Now, I just need to identify all of my Owls.

Classification of birds is very complex for us mere mortals. and very confusing as well; plus, about the time I find a bit of intelligent-seeming information, on the next link will be information claiming the first information has been discounted as wrong. It's kinda like all of those students who lost their 4.0 average and got knocked off the Dean's list on account of not including Pluto in their planets; and now, they're telling us that Pluto is not a planet.....
