Hardly a day passes that I don't see several. They must have a taste for salt. There are three spots in my horse lot where a salt block has been for a year or more and they are often found congregating on those bare salt-soaked spots. Interesting reading ONE(Scroll to #14), TWO(Scroll to #2), THREE, FOUR, and FIVE. I hope you enjoy them; thanks for looking. =x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x= =x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x= =x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=x=

I am always reminded of the days I spent at my Grandmother's house when I hear the doves cooing, these ones look very similar to what I remember. The most common dove where I live is the Spotted dove, I'm always having to shoo them away from the chook feeders!

I'm always having to shoo them away from the chook feeders! We have been working on watching McLeod's Daughters and it has taken me ten episodes to decide that "chook" is plain old chicken. Hopefully, they will continue to broadcast them in sequence until we get them all; we are still working on Season One.

Mourning Dove Rain Crow Sunday_19-June-2022
This bird exploded from the salty ground around the salt block and landed in this unusually large Sumac tree at the corner of the barn.
Here is what All About Birds, Audubon, Birdwatching HQ(Scroll to #14), Bird Advisors(Scroll to #2), and Wikipedia have to say about them.

Long time ago used to hunt these (I know better now??). Anyone who claimed they could get more than 5 with one box of shells was either a really good shot or a liar! These birds have an overdrive speed that is pretty impressive! cjt

They never get more than twenty feet away from the truck.
Nobody ever asks permission; if they see a corn field beside the road, they just drive out in it and go to hunting.
It is not uncommon to see them ricked across a tailgate like firewood from one side to the other.
When we go to do some farming in the fields, it is no trouble to tell where they parked; the ground will be absolutely littered with spent shells and empty beer cans.
I have no idea if there even is a limit.
What always griped me was that they would kill fifty or sixty and then be trying to force them off on someone else like they were doing them a big favor; "Here, you want a good mess of Doves to eat?"
I am no saint; but, I always drew the line at shooting Doves; for whatever reason, they just always seemed sort of Biblical to me.

Very much like our ring necked dove. Not all of them have the black ring round the neck.

They always seem so soothing and calming to me--gentle souls. Besides...not much meat on them!

There's people around here what would walk barefoot on hot blacktop from here to Murfreesboro for a mess of Dove meat. But, like you said, it takes a dozen or more to get you started. I never ate any myself, so I don't know what the big attraction is; but then, I never had four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie either.
